Srixon ZX7 driver: NCG Summary

Srixon ZX5
4.5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

The ZX7 driver sits brilliantly behind the ball. Srixon have done a great job redesigning the head shape to have more ‘tour appeal’.

Golfers will be delighted with how forgiving this low spin driver is; it’s long on centred strikes and slight miss hits.

PROS

  • Smaller, more refined shaping
  • Fast ball speeds across the face
  • Forgiving on off-centre strikes

CONS

  • The classic, small head shape might be intimidating for some players

First Impressions

Behind the ball, this is one of the best looking drivers I’ve seen all year. I love the classic shape of the ZX7, it reminds me of the drivers of the early 2000s. At address you feel like can easily work the ball with whichever trajectory or curve you choose.

Srixon ZX7 Review

It didn’t take me many shots to know I really like this driver. Theres something about the tour style head that really suits my eye. The head is really round and despite it’s classic shape, the carbon crown indicates that there is plenty of modern technology in the design.

In the swing, you notice the head feels light, giving you the impression that you are moving the head quickly. On average, I didn’t swing the club particularly fast at 106mph. But the ball speed and distance I achieved were very good.

On average, I carried the ZX7 driver 273.3 yards, with my longest shot carrying over 280 yards. This wasn’t with a high loopy ball flight either, it was pretty low but really strong. A cross wind wouldn’t touch it.

I wouldn’t normally consider putting a low spin driver in the bag as I have historically always hit these more wayward and inconsistently compared to the standard head design. Althought I am fairly accurate, I do make good use of the whole club face when out playing so I like drivers to be forgiving.

The ZX7 features a 15% bigger carbon crown which due to its lighter weight, moves the centre of gravity lower in the head and increases MOI, which is what creates the forgiveness.

I’m not saying that all your bad strikes are going to go long and straight, you will definitely know when you’ve miss hit one as the ZX7 provides great feedback to your hands, but the driver does give you more help than you’d expect.

The head also features a unique rebound frame which is designed to flex on impact and increases ball speed across the face.

The Srixon ZX7 driver has excellent customization features that allow you to change the loft and lie angle, as well as movable weight ports on the sole of the club. This gives you plenty of options to really dial in the club to achieve the flight you want, or help manage your tendencies.

I’ve had the ZX7 driver in the bad for a few rounds now and I have been really enjoying using it. The flight is great for the generally windy course I play at and I am able to get the ball in play most of the time. I’ve also been able to hit both draws and fades when required which is a huge credit to the driver as I wouldn’t normally try this would the bigger higher spinning heads.

This driver has been great in the bag and it’ll stay there for the foreseeable future!

Although Jack has no formal journalism training, He has been reading What's In The Bag articles since he started playing at 12 and studying golf swings since his dad first filmed his swing to reveal one of the worst over-the-top slice swings he reckons has ever been recorded, which set him off on the path to be a coach. His favourite club ever owned was a Ping G10 driver bought from a local top amateur with the hope that some of the quality golf shots would come with it (they didn't), and worst was a Nike SQ driver he only bought because Tiger was using it.
