South African Open Fantasy Golf picks
This week the European Tour heads to Glendower Golf Club with big names such as Matt Wallace, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel all turning out for the event.
The aim of our fantasy game this year is to pick the right players to match the RankBuster. This week’s is set at whopping 332 so who can you fit in your team to beat it? Here are my South African Open Fantasy Golf picks.
Matt Wallace
Fantasy Rank: 2
Every time Wallace has played over the last couple of months I’ve included him in my team. Despite his high fantasy rank it’s hard to ignore the Englishman even with the quality in the field.
He finished T38 at the event last year after a round of 74 saw him lose ground heading into the weekend. However, he has finished T5 and T2 in his last two events so carries some serious form coming into the event.
Branden Grace
Fantasy Rank: 3
Grace hasn’t been too active over the last couple of weeks, his last tournament being a T34 finish at the DP World Tour Championship.
However, he does carry tremendous course form at Gelndower having finished inside the top five in his last two starts there.
Jaco Van Zyl
Fantasy Rank: 36
Didn’t play at this event last season but in his two previous starts at the South Africa the 39-year-old has finished inside the top 20. Van Zyl also comes off the back of a T23 finish in Mauritius last week so carries some form into the week.
Jacques Blaauw
Fantasy Rank: 55
Blaauw has a very good record at this event having finished inside the top 40 on his last three starts at Glendower.
He finished T38 in 2016, T21 in 2017 and T4 at last year’s event. Can he improve his finish again this year?
Justin Walters
Fantasy Rank: 70
Like Wallace, Walters finished T38 at this event last year but he couldn’t capitalise on the pair of 69s he shot on Thursday and Friday as he cared weekend rounds of 73 and 71.
Despite that, Walters does have a good record at his home event and finished T4 in 2016 and T21 in 2017.
Joe Dean
Fantasy Rank: 172
We’ve followed Joe Dean’s career very closely at NCG HQ, particularly as his home club, Hillsborough, is the same as our equipment editor James Savage.
The Yorkshireman carries a very high fantasy rank coming in to week after missing out on his European Tour card at Lumine by a single shot. There’s one thing guaranteed with Dean and that’s birdies, if he can stop his bad holes from being disastrous then he could have a good finish this week.
