Scotland: One of oldest clubs set for new course plan

Six new 'beginners' holes to be built at North Inch

One of the oldest courses in the world is set for major changes as the club attempts to attract new golfers.

At a meeting of Perth and Kinross Council today (January 21), members of the Environment Committee are set to discuss methods of attracting beginners, youngsters and families to North Inch.

Free coaching for juniors and a new six-hole course are some of the developments that will be discussed.

Councillor Alan Grant said: “Interest in golf has soared this past year as the legacy from the 2014 Ryder Cup and Junior Ryder Cup has captured the imagination of many in our local communities and inspired many of our visitors too.”

As part of the proposal, a six-hole course will be created around the existing first three holes of the North Inch course, where golf is recorded as being played as early as 1450.

‘It’s vital our course meets the needs of its varied membership’ The short course has been designed to offer beginners an accessible golfing experience, with a round costing £3.50 for adults, £2.50 for juniors and £10 for families. Golf clubs will also be available to hire for free.

Grant added: “The North Inch Golf Course enhances the leisure facilities available in the local area and it’s vital that our municipal course meets the needs of its varied membership and continues to attract new players.

“The flexible pricing options mean that players of all ages will be able to choose a package closely tailored to their playing requirements and the new six hole course, mini golf course and discounted rates through the Golf Perthshire pass are sure to entice many more visitors to try their hand at golf in Perth and Kinross.”
