Scotland: Ground opens up on Scottish fairway
There’ll have been times when you wanted the course to open up below your feet and swallow you, but no one expects that to actually happen.
But golfers at Traigh were shocked when a 14-foot sinkhole appeared beside the seventh green.
The sinkhole came about as the result of a drainpipe failure in November last year and the West Highlands club’s Alec Stewart said: “Without repairing this pipe about half the course will revert to bog and this would effectively be the end of our course.”
‘This would be the end of our course’ Around £20,000-worth of repairs are required to prevent further damage, but Stewart said the club’s insurance would not pay for the work, and the club could not afford to pay for the repairs itself.
Golf has been played at Traigh since 1900 and the course is the most westernmost on the UK mainland. Between 1993 and 1995 it was redesigned by the Scottish architect John Salvesen.
