NCG SUMMARY

You would not believe that this driver only costs £239 if you were just hitting it and looking at the performance. PXG seem to have made a mistake by putting most of their cutting-edge technology in their lowest-cost driver giving the player great performance at a ridiculous price.

PXG have simplified the crown on the club for an all-black matte finish which looks brilliant, and they have a brilliant customization section when ordering online that allows you to buy the right club for your game.

PROS

  • High launching
  • Super light
  • Really forgiving

CONS

  • For a performance like this you feel guilty you haven’t spent more!

PXG 0211 driver review: First Impressions

PXG have had my interest since they turned up on the scene in 2014, but I’ve never had the opportunity to have a go with any of the equipment. I was extremely excited to get invited down to look at 2023s lineup and couldn’t get down there quickly enough.

The 0211 driver is PXG’s easy-to-hit, entry-level price point driver, but there is nothing budget about it. The head is matte black, no wacky designs on the crown on the sole, it’s a great shape a looks really hittable. It passes my purist test.

NCG Verdict

We went down to The Drift golf club in Surrey to one of their Super Hub fitting centres, where they had a very impressive display of heads, shafts, woods, irons, wedges, swing weight & loft and lie machines. There was no way you were leaving that bay without clubs that were exactly right for your game.

After a quick chat with the fitter where I poured my heart and soul out about my driving woes, he suggested I have a go with their easy to hit super forgiving 0211 model, as with a driver a touch more on the spinny side, I’d get more shots in play and hit less top spin pull shots straight into the garbage. Sounds good.

The 0211 appealed to me straight away. I am never a fan of driver heads with loads of graphics or features on the top; plain black works perfectly, as I like my golf clubs simple. My first few shots with Bob Parsons bargain driver were great, I loved the lightweight feel to the head, and miss-struck shots felt really good.

We settled on a Project X HZRDUS 6.5 60g shaft, and the results I got from this PXG club were excellent. An average of 166mph ball speed and 274 yards carry is really good for me, and on a couple, I was so close to getting to 170mph ball speed, which I can’t do with £600 driver, never mind a £199 one!

The face on the 0211 driver is made from Ti412 titanium alloy, which creates incredible rebound and ball speed efficiency, which is what gives it super high speeds. The driver also has a varied thickness face which means the PXG 0211 driver has great forgiveness and consistency.

To ensure maximum forgiveness, in addition to the variable face technology PXG have moved the mass in the head further back to ensure the center of gravity is in the optimal place for all abilities of golfers. This is an adjustment from the previous 0211 model, which also improves sound and feel.

So why wouldn’t a golfer just choose this driver over the top-of-the-range PXG Gen 6 driver? Well, in order to cut costs, the 0211 doesn’t have a carbon fiber crown, or adjustable sole weights, so the Gen 6 will feel, sound and perform a bit differently. It does, however, still have an adjustable hosel to ensure the flight is dialled in perfectly for your game.

To go from a golfer who fears a toey low spin hook to being a golfer who just wants to swing harder with more and more confidence, the 0211 completely changed my feeling towards golf drivers at the moment. At a reasonable quick swing speed, I often get put in the low spin maximum distance, which just doesn’t suit my on-course tendancies.

It was great to be fit into something that I feel will actually help my game. I love the PXG 0211 driver and I’m sure that if golfers can get it in their hands they will love it too.

Callaway Epic Max driver review

Jack is a PGA Golf Professional who specialises in coaching, teaching golf to beginners and top-level amateurs for 10+ years. He also loves his golf equipment and analysing the data of the latest clubs on the market using launch monitors, specialising in blade irons and low-spinning drivers despite having a chronically low ball flight.

Although Jack has no formal journalism training, He has been reading What's In The Bag articles since he started playing at 12 and studying golf swings since his dad first filmed his swing to reveal one of the worst over-the-top slice swings he reckons has ever been recorded, which set him off on the path to be a coach. His favourite club ever owned was a Ping G10 driver bought from a local top amateur with the hope that some of the quality golf shots would come with it (they didn't), and worst was a Nike SQ driver he only bought because Tiger was using it.

Jack is a member of Sand Moor Golf Club and regularly gets out on the golf course to prepare for tournaments. Jack uses a TaylorMade BRNR Mini driver, a half set of TaylorMade P7MB irons, MG4 wedges and a TaylorMade TP Reserve putter.
