Sand, water and phenomenal views - what more could you want from a golfing trip to Tenerife?

Reason for a Golf del Sur Golf Club

I was on holiday with my better half and decided that a break from each was probably best for the sanity of both of us. So, after a quick phone call, I found myself stood on the first tee at Golf del Sur.

Where is Golf del Sur?

Golf del Sur, which translates to ‘golf of the south’, is quite literally one of the southern-most points on the Canary Island of Tenerife. It is around a 20 minute drive from the airport and easily accessible by public transport.

What to expect

A beautiful 27 hole complex awaits with fantastic views, numerous hazards in the form of sand and water along with a country club feel to match.

When arriving at the resort it does feel like you’re getting the whole package and not just golf on the cheap for tourists which is a big tick in the box.

Golf del Sur

Golf carts, trolleys and putting greens as far as the eye can see make you feel like you’ve really arrived.

The golf course itself was renovated in 2005 and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017. If you like raised tee boxes and undulating fairways with bermuda rough to match then this is the perfect spot for you.

Favourite hole

The par-4 7th on the Campo Norte stretch of nine stood out from the rest. The drive looks narrow from the tee box and is a tough but rewarding one if you can find the right spot.

I managed to catch mine out of the middle and found the right hand side of the fairway which feeds down towards a water hazard protecting the front of the green.

Golf del Sur

I was left with a 7-iron in which certainly feels daunting with the water staring back at you – it really is one of the more pleasing approach shots on the eye during my visit.

My second shot found the back edge of the green and I have to say I was really happy to get down in two and walk away scribbling four down on my scorecard with a little smirk and a nod to the water.

My best bit

Think of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass but swap sand for water and the 2nd hole on the Campo Sur is something reminiscent of the iconic hole in Florida.

The tee box is raised but from the whites the hole still comes in at a whopping 196 yards. Yes, it is as daunting as it sounds.

Golf del Sur

It is a lovely picture opportunity and if you get the chance is an absolute must to play. I actually caught my tee shot fat and was thankful no-one else was around to watch.

But, as always with these things, my recovery shot was something out of Phil Mickelson’s top drawer and I was equally dismayed that not a single soul had witnessed it.

Alas, my crazy par save will forever go unnoticed.

What to look for

On a clear day the volcano dominates much of the skyline, but, wherever you are on the golf course you’ll have some fantastic views of the rest of the island.

If you don’t play the Campo Sur stretch of holes then make sure you take a walk to the 5th tee as the view is absolutely breathtaking.

When I go back

I would love to check out the Campo Links stretch of holes having made up my 18 holes by playing the Norte and Sur – this was due to the Links being closed for maintenance.
