Gleneagles Queen's

Played by NCG: Gleneagles (Queen’s)

NCG's Tom Lenton went to try out the James Braid masterpiece in the heart of Scotland

Reason for a Gleneagles Queen’s course review

I had been in the Highlands with some friends, and on our way home we decided to divert via Gleneagles to have a break from all the links golf we’d played…

Where is Gleneagles?

In Auchterarder, which is on the A9 right in between Stirling to the south and Perth to the north. It is an hour, give or take 10 minutes, from both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

What to expect

An immaculate course in a stunning Perthshire setting.

Although short, at around 6,000 yards, it is a par 68 so it’s no walkover.

The opening few holes are probably the hardest test with several par 4s topping the 400-yard mark that demand long, straight driving. Get warmed up for the closing holes – they aren’t as intimidating and an opportunity to shoot low.

Hole after hole is incredibly pretty and you find yourself admiring the landscape as much as you do enjoying the golf.

Favourite Hole

The back to back par 3s at 13 and 14 are right in the centre of the course and you see them on the lower level when playing the 4th and 5th.

They aren’t the best par 3s you will ever play but there is a sense of calm when down on that section of the course that makes it pretty special. There is also a pond that will gather anything off line.

My best bit

On the way out I have never been so happy to score just 11 points. We were the first off at 7am and were extremely fortunate to have the course to ourselves for half an hour or so. It is just an amazing place to be.

What to look out for

Despite looking short on the scorecard, the Queen’s course is no gimme. You need to drive it long and straight if you are to make any inroads here. The par-3 17th has a huge slope from front to back, try to get your ball past the hole to make it an easier two putt.

When I go back

I will stay for two nights, play the other two courses, sample the amazing breakfast and all the other world-class facilities.
