Ping SensorDry 2.5 Graphene Waterproof trouser review: First Impressions
To be fair it’s difficult to get too excited about a pair of waterproof trousers but I have to say that out of the box, these felt better than most. They felt just as soft, stretchy and lightweight as the accompanying jacket. We tested the one colour available in the trouser, which is black. It is constructed from polyester and has been engineered with Graphene to improve performance.
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in hexagonal lattice and it is the lightest, strongest and toughest material ever discovered. It was isolated in 2004 by researchers at Manchester University. Ping has incorporated a striking Graphene print to the inside of the garment to help absorb and retain warmth.
These trousers have impressive statistics on paper – they are waterproof to 20,000mm (waterproof in heavy rain) and breathable to 20,000g/sq metre (very breathable). They come with an impressive 5-year waterproof guarantee. All seams are fully sealed.

In trouser fittings I am generally a pretty consistent 32inch waist, 29 inch inside leg. Following the excellent sizing guide on the Ping website, I opted for a small waist (30-32 inch) and short length (29 inch) trouser and this fitted really nicely. Although there are no belt loops, there is some adjustability at the waist due to the stretchy material and also some velcro fastenings on both sides. There is a single buttoned leg closure and zip leg openings. Although the garment does lack velcro adjustability around the bottom of the trouser which I have often found to be a useful feature.
Testing was carried out over several days, both on and off course, in wet conditions but with variable temperatures. I generally wear waterproof trousers over a standard pair of trousers, which was certainly the case during testing. They were comfortable to wear and were an ideal fit. There was no sense of restriction of movement. Nor did they feel cumbersome or look baggy.
A few words about the pockets: there are three of them, and all are zippered. The rear pocket is roomy and practical. The two side pockets are constructed from a stretchy mesh material, and I’m not sure what I’d use them for. An added ‘feature’ is a slit access to the trouser pocket worn beneath but only on the right side. This is usually useful, but I would prefer the slit opening to be bilateral and to have a closure (zip or velcro), and that’s not the case.
Those minor niggles apart, these waterproof trousers were a joy to wear, and also not wear, because when I took them off they folded away so compactly and left plenty of room in my lightweight carry bag for important stuff like snacks.

I have worn these trousers on a number of occasions, including in some very heavy rain. They have remained waterproof throughout. I often find everything gets a bit hot and sweaty if I wear a full waterproof kit. I had no such issues with this gear, which reflects the excellent breathability on offer. And another plus was that they dried off really quickly post-round.
There is pretty minimal logo activity on these trousers but I’m generally pretty keen to get out of my waterproof trousers after leaving the golf course so I don’t see these seeing any off-course action despite their impressive comfort.
So just as with the jacket, I think these are probably the only waterproof trousers you will ever need and can be used in all weather conditions. They come highly recommended.
