Padraig Harrington claims Honda Classic crown

Padraig Harrington insists there are more wins to come after he landed his first PGA Tour win since the 2008 US PGA with victory at the Honda Classic.

The three-time major winner edged out American Daniel Berger in a play-off after and absorbing fifth day at PGA National resort in Florida

The pair finished on six under par after final round leaders Ian Poulter and Paul Casey failed to capitalise on their advantage.

Harrington, who lead after 36 holes, was five shots behind Poulter at one stage on Monday but made four birdies in a row to get right back into contention.

Poulter carded a triple bogey on the 14th which left Harrington and Patrick Reed in pole position but the American played the Bear Trap (15, 16, 17) in +4.

After Harrington found the water on 17 on his way to a double, he had to birdie 18 to tie with Berger on -6. The Irishman holed a 15ft putt to force the extra holes.

After the win, Harrington insisted he can continue to challenge for titles in the future 

“I think I’ve found that mental edge I’ve been lacking,” he said. 

“I know if I am contending, I can win.

“When I get in contention, I can hit the shots. I wasn’t afraid.”

Berger admitted he was nervous after finding himself in the play-off but insists it will stand him in good stead for the future

“I think it was a great learning experience. This was the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life,” he said.

Harrington started the event ranked 297th but will jump up to 80th and play in the Masters next month.
