Open Golf: Rose and Donald going home early

English duo face blank weekend

JUSTIN Rose missed his third Open cut in four years just a month after lifting the US Open.

The 32-year-old had just two birdies over the two days and a second-round 77 left him at 10 over. His round included two double bogeys, at the 6th and 10th, and a bogey at the 18th left him well adrift.

Alongside him on the same figure was Luke Donald who came undone with an opening 80. Donald actually reached the turn in two under but three bogeys on the way home left him three shots outside the required mark.

Matteo Manassero was another notable name to exit stage left after an 81 which comprised of eight bogeys and two doubles.

Scott Piercy had the worst score of the day, a 17-over 88 after bringing down the curtain on proceedings with a treble-bogey seven Major winners to also miss the weekend included Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk as well as the more likely figures of Sir Nick Faldo and Tom Watson.

Scott Piercy had the worst score of the day, a 17-over 88 after bringing down the curtain on proceedings with a treble-bogey seven. The American had three birdies in his first five holes of the Championship but went out in 46 in his second round and continued to see shots drip away coming home.

Those to sneak in included Geoff Ogilvy and Paul Lawrie after the cut mark slipped to plus eight very late in the day while defending champion Ernie Els will have to come from six over to mount any charge.

Mark Townsend

Been watching and playing golf since the early 80s and generally still stuck in this period. Huge fan of all things Robert Rock, less so white belts. Handicap of 8, fragile mind and short game
