A Former Sunderland academy footballer teamed up with a 13-year-old playing her first season of competitive golf to win the Inter County Junior Mixed Foursomes.

Lee Dobson and Abbi Wheatley, both of South Moor, coped well with tricky conditions on a windy day at Ryton to sign for a net 72.

‘You always play one shot that makes you want to come back for more’ Dobson, 21, has not kicked a football since falling out of love with the sport, deciding instead to focus on golf. He was able to get his handicap down from 25 to 10 and has won three junior and five men’s club competitions.

He said: “What I love about golf is the challenge and that however many bad shots you play, you always play one shot that makes you want to come back for more.”

Wheatley’s debut season has brought victories in Durham County’s Junior Spring Meeting at Seaton Carew and a Billingham Junior Open.

She was only two weeks past her 13th birthday when the team triumphed at Ryton.

England footballer heads home to launch cancer charity

Former Sunderland footballer Jordan Henderson returned to the Sunderland area to open a state-of-the-art driving range and launch a cancer charity.

Jordan Henderson visited Washington to launch the Eileen Smith Foundation in memory of his grandmother, who died earlier this year from cancer.

Henderson’s father, Brian, himself a survivor of cancer, told the Sunderland Echo: “The charity is named after my mother-in-law who died from the illness this month.

“When she was at hospital she shared long hours of conversation with other suffers, some of whom were elderly and far less fortunate, in the sense they had to travel on two or three public transport buses to get to and from hospital.”

One of the first donations received by the charity was £3,000 from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Liverpool player Jordan Henderson said: “It’s bad enough to have cancer, without having the worry and hassle of struggling to get to and from treatment. I know how awful cancer can be because my dad experienced it.

“He has been through it and seen how it can affect people and I think it’s a really good cause which is going to be greatly appreciated.”

Northumberland course closed following bomb scare

Two holes at Dunstanburgh Castle were closed after a golfer discovered what was believed to be an unexploded Second World War shell in a bunker.

Head greenkeeper Stuart Imeson said: “One of the golfers left quite a large footprint in the bunker, started raking and ended up with a big hole and spotted the shell. It’s not something you would usually find in a bunker on the golf course.”

Bomb explosive experts from Catterick identified the device as a harmless smoke bomb, which was taken away for disposal.
