NCG Fantasy Golf: Who are we picking for The Open?
This week the best players in golf travel to Carnoustie for the 147th Open Championship. The fairways are running firm and fast which will help the shorter hitters and it could be anyone’s guess as to who will lift the Claret Jug come Sunday.
World number one Dustin Johnson enters the oldest major in golf as the bookies favourite at 12/1 with Justin Rose close behind at 16/1 but are they worth a place in your fantasy team?
The aim in this year’s game is to pick the right players to match the RankBuster. This week’s is set at 233 so who can you fit in your team to beat it? Here are my picks…
Fantasy Rank: 4
It’s Rickie’s time to end his major drought. He’s a big fan of links golf and he’s well prepared heading into the week with a T6 finish at the Scottish Open last week and his performance at this year’s Masters showed, yet again, that he’s a major champion in waiting. The American has also finished inside the top 25 at the last 6 majors and this year has finished solo second at the Masters and T20 at the US Open.
Fantasy Rank: 12
One of, if not the straightest hitter of a golf ball in the world. Will benefit massively from the firm fairways and is currently in the best form of his career thanks to wins at Wentworth and the Quicken Loans National as well as a second placed finish at the Italian Open, T25 at the US Open, and T2 finish at last week’s John Deere Classic.
Fantasy Rank: 27
Johnson’s short game could prove vital this week and he currently ranks inside the top 25 for strokes gained around the green on the PGA Tour. He’s also a relatively good performer at The Open and has only missed the cut three times in 14 starts, all of those being his first three starts. It’s worth noting that he also finished T20 back in 2007 when Carnoustie last hosted The Open.
Fantasy Rank: 46
Nobody loves The Open quite like Matthew Southgate. The Englishman’s game is shaping up well ahead of this year’s championship after a T23 at the Scottish, an event he normally doesn’t perform well at. His last two finishes at The Open have been T12 at Royal Troon and T6 last year and Birkdale and he’ll be looking to go a few steps better this week.
Fantasy Rank: 65
Like Southgate, Bjork has prepared well for this week’s major championship with a T8 at the Open de France, T14 at the Irish Open and a T19 at the Scottish Open. Will The Open be a step too far for the Swede or will he rise to the occasion?
Fantasy Rank: 79
The South African almost became the first player to shoot a 59 in a final round on the European Tour on Sunday and coming off that victory at Gullane it will be hard to look past Stone as your outside pick this week.
