There was a time when wedges were an after-thought – now they are a category in their own right.
The better the player you are, the greater the proportion of your shots will be within 100 yards or so of the pin so it’s crucial these scoring clubs are working for you.
THE METHODOLOGY
We conducted the test at Moor Allerton GC in Leeds, where we used their state-of-the-art fitting studio complete with Trackman launch monitor, as well as their outdoor practice facilities.
We hit a range of shots from short chips to full pitches, sand shots, lob shots and everything in between.
Brands were invited to send in wedges of several lofts with the option to provide custom-fitted samples if they preferred to do so.
THE TESTERS
James Whitaker
Handicap: Pro
“I’m pretty traditional when it comes to wedges – the head shapes have to be right and they have to look like they belong to the same set – like a mini set of irons.”
Pete Chippindale
Handicap: 12
“My short game is a strength and if I think a new wedge or two can make those really difficult shots a little easier then I’m certainly prepared to invest.”
Chris Peel
Handicap: 14
“The sheer choice of lofts and bounces and head options is new to me so I’m looking forward to seeing just how much difference it can make to a mid-handicapper like me.”
