Who's going to survive Muirfield Village for PGA Tour glory? Oddschecker's Tom Jacobs has made his picks to win in Ohio

The PGA Tour stars head to Ohio to take on Muirfield Village this week. Scroll down for my Memorial Tournament betting tips, but first…

Memorial Tournament preview

Venue: Muirfield Village Golf Club, Ohio, USA

Date: June 1-4, 2023

Course stats: Par 72; 7,533 yards

Course summary: This famous Jack Nicklaus and Desmond Muirhead design has plenty of character. Undulating, tree-lined fairways weave towards tricky green complexes made up of a Bentgrass and Poa Annua blend. Water is in play on 11 holes, whilst thick rough, heavy bunkering and a recent renovation increase the level of challenge. This is a true ball-strikers paradise, with accuracy perhaps prevailing over distance.

Purse: $20 million

Defending champion: Billy Horschel (-13)

TV coverage

Thursday: Sky Sports Golf from 5pm and Main Event from 10.30pm

Friday: Sky Sports Golf from 5pm and Main Event from 10pm

Saturday: Sky Sports Golf from 4.30pm and Main Event from 8.15pm

Sunday: Sky Sports Golf from 4.30pm and Main Event from 7.30pm

2023 Memorial Tournament betting tips

The Banker: Patrick Cantlay @ 12/1

I am having a hard time leaving Patrick Cantlay out, so I didn’t. 12/1 in the each-way extra market might not seem great on paper considering Cantlay is still winless this season, but I was sweet on him for the PGA Championship at 18/1 and he now returns to a course where he is a two-time winner.

Sure, his win in 2021 can probably be scrubbed as he wouldn’t have won had Jon Rahm been allowed to play the final round, but it is still another win to his tally, and he had to beat Collin Morikawa in a playoff to claim it, and he had to be in the mix in the first place.

Outside of those two wins, Cantlay also has 3rd and 4th place finishes here, in 2022 and 2018 respectively, and he’s in great current form, coming off a 9th place finish at Oak Hill.

Cantlay continues to be one of the best drivers of the ball on Tour and his irons were rock-solid at the PGA Championship as well, so he is very likely to be in the mix here again on Sunday.

The Each-Way Play: Rickie Fowler @ 35/1

Jason Day got a long overdue win this year, as did Justin Rose, and now it is time for Rickie Fowler to return to the winner’s circle for the first time since 2019.

On top of two runner-up finishes here, one way back in 2010 and the other seven years later in 2017, Rickie Fowler has also finished 8th, 11th, and 14th on this challenging course, and now it is time for him to get the win.

The two times he’s finished runner-up he’s had a clear opportunity to win, and now with his golf swing rebuilt once again by Butch Harmon, I truly believe another win is on the horizon for someone who was previously amongst the best in the world.

Fowler has finished inside the top 20 in seven of his last eight starts, with one missed cut at the PGA Championship his only blemish in that span. His 6th place finish last week at Colonial was his best of 2023 and is behind only his 2nd at the ZOZO Championship as his best result this season.

Back Fowler to find a win again, at a course he loves.

Another Each Way: Si Woo Kim @ 55/1

Si Woo Kim is still one of the most overlooked golfers on the PGA Tour because every year there is a shiny new thing. All he has done though since making the step up to this level is win, and win often.

Kim first made it on to the PGA Tour full-time in 2016 and that year he won the Wyndham Championship and lost in a playoff at the Barbasol Championship. A year later, Kim became the youngest ever player at 21, to win the Players Championship, and then in 2018 he lost another playoff at the RBC Heritage. Something of a “lean period” followed for Kim in 2019 and 2020, but Kim won again in 2021 at the American Express and lost another playoff at the Wyndham Championship. Add another win at Sony Open this year, and you have a player who has won four times already and lost three playoffs, in just seven years on Tour.

The South Korean star now returns to the Memorial tournament where he has finished 18th, 9th, and 13th in his past three starts, and he looks to be in solid form coming in. His T29 finish at Colonial last time out was by far his best effort on that golf course, and Kim has ranked inside the top 20 in four of his last eight starts in SG Approach and inside the top 17 in two of his last three starts, in SG Tee to Green. Hitting the ball well and now returning to a course he likes; Kim can challenge again.

Memorial Tournament betting

The Long Shot: Harris English @ 100/1

I simply cannot understand why Harris English is triple digits to win this week at the Memorial Tournament, even if the course potentially demands more off the tee than he can offer.

We have seen shorter players than English win this event, and this multiple PGA Tour winner has now gained strokes with his irons in four straight events, which is a hugely positive sign.

English probably should have won last week at Colonial and many will be put off by his poor final round there, but I am willing to take the positives in him finishing 12th and sitting inside the top three after each of the first three rounds.

That T12 finish last week was his fourth top-13 finish in individual events in 2023, and it adds to an impressive T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, his T3 at the Wells Fargo Championship and T12 finishes at Riviera and Colonial.

He’s priced like a player who can’t even compete at this course, but he’s finished 13th and 18th here in the past and he’s playing as well as many above him in the market, so I will take a chance on English at a big price, given a win appears to be on the horizon for the former Georgia Bulldog.
