After months of controversy, rumours, and some awkwardly out of touch interviews, the much-anticipated first field of 48 players for the LIV Golf Invitational Series has – finally – been released.
Two-time major champion Dustin Johnson shocked everyone as he was announced as the breakaway series’ headline star, while the likes of Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Louis Oosthuizen, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell were also listed for the Saudi Arabia-backed league’s opening event at Centurion between June 9-11.
Equally as surprising was the omission of Phil Mickelson, who despite being tipped as a shoo-in to play in the LIV Golf opener amid heavy speculation and a high-profile hiatus, ended up being absent from the list. (For now…)
