‘It was a bit odd’: Watch Rahm almost take someone out with club throw

Jon Rahm was on one at the Memorial Tournament, but it could have been a lot worse when a petulant toss almost ended in disaster

What is it with Jon Rahm and the Memorial Tournament?

In 2020, Rahm won at Muirfield Village by three-shots in dominant fashion. In 2021, bizarre scenes unfolded at Jack’s Place when he was forced to withdraw during the final round due to a positive covid test – robbing the Spaniard of back-to-back victories as he held a six-shot lead.

This year, drama unfolded once again at Muirfield Village as Rahm experienced a crazy second round which saw him make four birdies, put two balls in the hazard, launch a club, nearly hit a woman, then produce a highly relatable shank to card a 2-under 70.

OK, there’s a lot to take in there. So let’s start with what you all came here for, that club toss…

Starting his round on the back-nine, Rahm was left with 100 yards in on the par-5 11th – usually bread and butter for the 2021 US Open champion – but pulled his approach left of the pin leading to some Jordan Spieth-esque backchat: “Oh my god, amazing line there, Jon. That is incredible.”

Followed by a Sergio Garcia-esque temper tantrum, as he tossed his wedge towards his bag almost hitting a mic operator in the process. Here’s the moment in all its petulancy…

“Sorry, sorry,” Rahm said as he walked towards the woman to apologise. Fortunately no harm was done, but it does lead us to question once again when will officials start dishing out penalties for hissy-fits at big tournaments?

Now on to the more light-hearted, relatable episode during Rahm’s rollercoaster round, as he hit a dreaded s***k on the par-4 2nd.

It wasn’t just any old shank either, as he managed to send his ball so far right it ended up in someone’s back garden. Again, here’s the horribly relatable moment for you to enjoy…

Rahm ended up making bogey from the backyard, but had Twitter in hysterics following the shank of all shanks, with some fellow PGA Tour pros even getting in on the act:

Rahm too saw the funny side after his round:

Rahm bounced back from the disastrous episode to finish with two birdies and card a round of 70, proving that the World No 2 is, in fact, not at all like us.

How did Rahm assess his round? “It was a bit odd.”
