Guess which major champ ‘begged’ to join LIV
The fiery character seemed a perfect fit for Greg Norman’s rebel series, but the LIV CEO was having none of it
If there’s one thing LIV’s roster isn’t shy of it’s controversial characters. From Phil Mickelson to Patrick Reed, Greg Norman’s rebel series has attracted some of golf’s most antagonistic names.
Despite that, and the fact the breakaway league was forced to fill its inaugural event with several unknowns, there was no place for one of golf’s most colourful stars John Daly – no matter how hard he “begged”.
In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, the two-time major winner admitted he pleaded with Norman for a spot in LIV Golf, but was rejected by the Aussie for being “too old”.
“I begged Greg Norman to let me be on the LIV tour,” Daly said. “There’s some [players] that aren’t deserving because I should be on that tour.
“[But] Greg said he’s not doing anymore and that I’m too old.”
After Daly admitted he was rejected by Norman, the Aussie then appeared on Fox News claiming players are contacting him on a daily basis asking to join LIV.
“I get calls every day from players [saying] ‘I want in, I want it, how can I join LIV?’,” Norman said. “I tell them I say ‘sorry, the shop is closed’, so the list gets longer and longer and longer for the players who want to come in.”
Classic. But even with Norman claiming “the shop is closed” for new LIV acquisitions, numerous players continue to be linked with a move to the Saudi-funded series. Here’s who we think might be next.
