Tiger Woods might have just confirmed his spot at the US Open

Tiger Woods appeared to confirm his participation at this year’s US Open ahead of the Genesis Invitational.

When you see images of Tiger Woods at the US Open host venue, you could be forgiven for assuming the obvious.

Riviera Country Club, the host of the 2023 Genesis Invitational where Woods is set to return to the PGA Tour, is just a 15-minute drive away from a certain other championship golf course.

The US Open will land at Los Angeles Country Club in June for the first time as America’s national championship goes to the City of Angels for the first time in 75 years.

By competing in the second full-field designated event of the season, Woods killed two birds with one stone by visiting the venue on Wilshire Boulevard to prepare for the third major of the year.

As reported by Golfweek, the 15-time major champion was given a yardage book by a club official and took a tour in a golf cart of the club, which was first established in 1897.

LACC was awarded the US Open in 2015 and hosted the Walker Cup two years later.

The US Open was the only major championship Woods didn’t play in 2022 as Matt Fitzpatrick took centre stage at The Country Club in Brookline.

Woods returned to competition at the Masters just over a year after his serious car accident in February 2021 and walked off the 18th green on the final day in 47th place.

His performance at the PGA Championship the month after was nothing to be sniffed at, but his third-round withdrawal showed that Brookline might have provided a physical test beyond Woods’ capability.

The Open Championship at St Andrews and Augusta National provided familiarity for Woods last year and this could explain why he is determined to play an “ACTUAL” PGA Tour event (his own words) at the Genesis Invitational.

Having withdrawn from the Hero World Challenge in December after playing at the PNC Championship with his son Charlie, this was a setback that could’ve ruled out any competitive action before the Masters in the eyes of some golf fans.

But not only is Woods aiming for an 83rd win on Tour sooner than expected, he’s also looking months ahead and planning on more major glory.
