We know Henrik Stenson’s 3 wood has already reached legendary status but the 2016 Open Champion didn’t even bother putting a driver in the bag as he stormed to victory at the Wyndham.
The Iceman did have a Callaway Epic Sub Zero driver at the PGA Championship and did use one during his Open victory at Royal Troon last year.
He hits his Callaway Diablo Octane 3 wood 300 yards dead straight pretty much every time so why bother with the big stick?
And sometimes accuracy is more important than distance. Boring but true. Stenson ranked 8th in the field for driving accuracy, hitting the fairway 75 percent of the time.
That 3 wood, his Legacy Black irons and Odyssey White Hot putter were in the bag the last time he stormed to FedEx Cup glory in 2013. Could we see a repeat this time around?
He also carried a new-ish XR16 5 wood at the Wyndham and has switched his wedges around recently.
He now uses the Mack Daddy Forged in a 50 and 56 and has opted for a Phil Mickelson special for his lob wedge.
It’s the Mack Daddy PM Grind in 60˚ which has a huge toe area – ideal for opening up the face and hitting ridiculous flop shots.
