Greg Owen joint leader after St. Jude Classic third round
England’s Greg Owen shares the lead at the St. Jude Classic after carding a three-under round 67 at the Memphis tournament.
The 43-year old is joined by Argentinian Fabian Gomez, with the pair both at nine-under after three rounds.
“I feel good. I felt very relaxed today,” said Owen. “If I can stay that relaxed tomorrow, I don’t see a problem.
“I’m reading them well and my pace is good and I feel good with the putter.
“I’ve been working hard on it since I’ve gone to the core, I feel a lot more comfortable.
“I just got a good feel for it.”
The Englishman is still looking for a first win on the PGA, but admits that he is taking this course one hole at a time: “I’m not thinking too much ahead, still 18 holes out here to go, and I got to keep doing the same stuff.”
American Brooks Koepka is a shot behind the leading pair, with the 25-year old looking to improve his fortune in the final day.
“Obviously I didn’t play very well. I just didn’t hit many good golf shots,” said the 25-year old. “I didn’t put the ball in the fairway, which you can’t get it close to the hole with the rough being like this and the pins tucked as they were.
“[Tomorrow] I’ll just do what I’m doing.
“Obviously got to put the ball in play a little better. I don’t know what happened today, but go work on it at the range.”
The last event before the US Open, the field is distinctly lacking prior to Chambers Bay Major debut.
“I think it’s a wonderful golf course to play,” said six-time US Open winner Phil Mickelson. “It provides numerous shot-making opportunities to get to a number of different pins.
“I think like St. Andrews, the first time you play it, you don’t know where to go, you don’t how the mounds will react.
“You end up not understanding it, but the more you play St. Andrews, the more you play Chambers Bay, you get all these different pin placements, you can hit a variety of different shots, you have a number of options.
“It’s a really enjoyable challenge and fun golf course to play.”
Mickelson currently sits tied-19th at three-under.
