FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Midlayer review

Looking to update your winter wardrobe? Jonathan Taylor has put the FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Midlayer to the test.

FootJoy’s latest apparel range, The Thermoseries, is designed to be layered in colder conditions. Here we review their all-important midlayer.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Midlayer review: NCG Summary

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Vest review
NCG SUMMARY

This is another really useful and flexible element of any layering system. The Thermoseries Hybrid midlayer is suitable for most conditions, thanks to moisture-wicking material and a soft jacquard knit fabrication.

PROS

  • Really comfortable and smart.
  • Flexible performance.
  • Nice range of colours.

CONS

  • Not much protection against the elements.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Midlayer review: First Impressions

A crucial component of an outdoor layering system is the insulating layer. For the golfer this will typically be a sleeved mid-layer and they come in a variety of materials and thicknesses, all designed to provide not only insulation but also freedom of movement. Here I test out the new offering from FootJoy, which forms part of their newly introduced Thermoseries layering collection.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Midlayer review

This garment is available in three colours, all of which look smart. I tested the navy with slate model which was immediately particularly striking on the eye . It features a half zip construction and presents a really clean look, unencumbered by any pockets.

The Jacquard knit fabrication felt incredibly soft. The fabric did feel to be at the thinner end of a mid layer spectrum. A couple of FootJoy motifs adorn the left collar and upper back. There is also a snowflake logo on the left lower side which reminds us that it is part of the Thermoseries family.

The overall appearance was such that I couldn’t wait to try it on the course.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Midlayer review: On The Course

I’m about 173 cm tall and weigh 74 kg with an average (ie non-athletic) shape. The medium size fitted nicely. FootJoy describe the fit as athletic. I have tested this as a second layer, over a base layer or a polo shirt without any sense of restriction, but I don’t think it would work over a base layer plus polo shirt for me. And although this has not been badged as a base layer, the wicking and anti-microbial performance of the material, allied to the soft next to the skin feel, suggests to me that this could be used as a base layer in colder conditions.

I generally tested this over a base layer and beneath a gilet/vest. I felt that the fit was insulating but there was no impedance to my swing. Breathability seemed to be fine, with no stickiness or moisture build-up in the varying temperatures experienced during testing.

Given that this is a lightweight midlayer, there were really no downsides to this piece of kit. Granted, it is not the warmest product on the market, but there’s a good warmth-to-weight ratio. Furthermore, I invariably carry my golf bag and I have experienced ‘pilling’ at the back of the garment with other similar weight midlayers. There were no such issues with this model.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Midlayer review: The 19th hole

I really enjoyed wearing this garment. It is smart, comfortable and a flexible part of a layering system. The nice range of colours enhances the appeal.

The unobtrusive branding, allied to the look, means that this is certainly something that could be worn out and about without screaming ‘Golfer’ to all and sundry. But I think this is will get plenty of use on the course so I don’t envisage it will see much non-golf action.
