FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Jacket review: First Impressions

Today we are assessing the outer layer of the newly introduced Thermoseries layering collection from FootJoy. The best outer layers need to be comfortable, allow freedom of movement and also provide protection against the weather. Additional features, including adjustability and pockets, are also a consideration when selecting your ideal jacket.

This product is available in two colours. I tested the charcoal/grey model which featured a brushed Jacquard knit body and sleeves in charcoal, with a contrasting cire (which means glossy) finish to the front and the collar (in grey). There is a full-length zip, an adjustable collar, a couple of open hand pockets and a small zippered chest pocket. Overall, I think this is a really good-looking jacket.

The Jacquard knit fabrication felt very soft, although a minor quibble is that, as part of a layering system, it’s not going to be next to the skin, so is not particularly relevant. The overall construction is of a typically high standard that we expect from FootJoy. Two FootJoy motifs adorn the left collar and upper back. There is also an almost invisible snowflake logo on the left lower side which, if spotted, reminds us that it is part of the Thermoseries family.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Jacket review: On The Course

I’m about 173 cm tall and weigh 74 kg with an average (ie non-athletic) shape. The medium size felt quite close-fitting initially and I was concerned that I might struggle to layer beneath it. However I found that I could wear the complementing Thermoseries base layer and midlayer pieces beneath this jacket with no hint of restriction when swinging. However, when I tried to squeeze the fourth piece of the layering system, the vest, beneath the jacket, that didn’t work. What I did find was that I could fit my normal waterproof jacket over the base layer, midlayer and hybrid jacket combination perfectly comfortably.

The full zip closure on the jacket worked fine. There was no impedance to putts and chips as can sometimes occur with this type of construction. I like the zippered chest pocket but didn’t put anything in it. I also liked the easily adjustable collar which provided a snug fit. The open hand pockets will keep your hands warm.

As an inveterate bag carrier, particularly in the winter months, I need to give careful consideration to clothing choices because I’ll either be wearing the stuff or carrying it. Although I have a good selection of midlayers and vests to combat the cold, I don’t have any non-waterproof jackets. Having worn this on several occasions, I’m not sure this would be the most obvious choice for me to use out on the course.

The standard hybrid jacket from FootJoy is water-resistant and windproof and it also comes at a lower price point. So that would get my vote. That said, I’m sure there will be a demand for this jacket as it does have windproof properties and is very smart and comfortable.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Jacket review: The 19th hole

I have generally been really impressed with the function and flexibility of other offerings in the Thermoseries range but I do not see this becoming part of my cooler-weather golfing wardrobe. However, I do feel that it is something that would work well off the course due to the appealing appearance and snug fit.

Comfort: 8.5/10
Value for Money: 7/10
