Farmers Insurance Open Fantasy Golf picks

This week the PGA Tour heads to Torrey Pines following Adam Long’s surprise victory at the CareerBuilder Challenge last weekend.

Tiger Woods makes his first start of 2019 but he won’t be accompanied by Phil Mickelson who is missing his home town event for the first time in 29 years.

Last year, Jason Day required a Monday play-off to defeat Alex Noren to claim his 11th PGA Tour victory.

The aim of our fantasy game this year is to pick the right players to match the RankBuster. This week’s is set at 231 so who can you fit in your team to beat it? Here are my Farmers Insurance Open Fantasy Golf picks.

Marc Leishman

Fantasy Rank: 7

Leishman has been in great form over the last three months. The Australian’s lowest finish since his win at the CIMB Classic was a T18 finish the following week.

In his last three starts Leishman has finished second, T4 and T3 and to make it better he also has an impressive course record at Torrey Pines.

Emiliano Grillo

Fantasy Rank: 22

Whenever Grillo is in the field I find it hard to ignore him as his price is never through the roof but he always delivers good finishes.

The Argentine finished well last year with a T12 finish. Just like his competitors he struggled in the final round, shooting two over par.

Beau Hossler

Fantasy Rank: 37

Hossler had a good first three rounds at this event last year and was in contention heading into the final day. However, the American slumped to a final round of 79 and slid to T35.

Joaquim Neimann

Fantasy Rank: 48

Neimann is a massive wildcard coming into this event having no course record and being out form.

However, the Chilean is an incredible talent at the age of just 20 years-old, and I think he’ll rediscover the form that saw him earn his PGA Tour card in just eight starts in 2018.

Brendan Steele

Fantasy Rank: 61

Struggled on the final day of last week’s CareerBuilder Challenge, finishing T57.

Steele however, has had two good finishes in his last two starts at Torrey Pines, delivering a T29 finish last year and T20 in 2017. If he can repeat one of those finishes then he will be worth tremendous value.

Charley Hoffman

Fantasy Rank: 63

Hoffman comes into this event as a major sleeper having not finished inside the top 20 of an event since last year’s Northern Trust.

Can the American rediscover his form at Torrey Pines?

Matthew Beedle

Matthew has been playing golf since he was around 13 and took up the game at a local nine-hole municipal course with his friends before joining Pontefract & District Golf Club just over the hedge.

Still a member of Pontefract with a handicap of 3, he currently sits on the board of directors to help with digital and marketing initiatives in order to improve membership and visitor income.

Matthew graduated university with a First Class in Sports Journalism from Leeds Trinity University and has been working in the golf industry since graduating.

NCG’s social media & marketing manager, Matthew’s main job role is to increase website traffic to the National Club Golfer website via our email and social media channels as well as driving entries to grow our NCG Top 100s Tour events amongst other tasks.

Not one to change his equipment too often, Matthew currently plays the TaylorMade M2 driver which has lasted the test of time in his bag. Elsewhere, you’ll find him using the TaylorMade Stealth 2 three-wood with a Ping G425 Crossover 2-iron to aid his long game.

Through his 4-iron to Gap Wedge, Matthew uses the Ping i500 irons accompanied by Ping’s Glide 3.0 56-degree and 60-degree wedges.

Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
