East Midlands Round-up: Cort sets record with victory

Cort sets strokeplay championship record with victory

Matthew Cort has won the Leicestershire PGA Strokeplay Championship for the six year in a row.

Cort, who had taken up a position at Beedles Lake, shot a four-under 142 to win the trophy at Park Hill.

Speaking to the Leicester Mercury, Cort said: “I am thrilled and proud to retain the title after this run of success.”

Kibworth’s Bob Larratt has won the competition once more, but not consecutively.

County PGA secretary Ian Lyner added: “It is a great record of success by Matthew, with his fellow county PGA pros keen to challenge him.”

Chesterfield golfers have been working hard to raise more than £6,000 for a hospice.

Professional and last year’s captain, Mike McLean, with last year’s lady captain, Sue Young, met with Sarah Cross from Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and handed over a cheque of £6,582.

Club secretary Trevor Glover said: “Sarah was overwhelmed by the sum raised and thanked Mike and Sue, who in turn thanked our members for their support and generosity throughout the year.”

Youngsters impress at schools championships

More than 40 youngsters took to the fairways at Girton for the annual Cambridgeshire Schools Golf Championships.

Twelve teams took part in the competition, with Soham Village College retaining the Team Handicap Shield.

The team of Natasha Bamford, Alfie Guy-Pinkney and Jordanne Sillitoe qualified for the English Schools’ Team Championships which will be held at Woodhall Spa in July.

In the individual competition, Comberton Village College students Jake Freeman and Nathan Jackson were tied on a gross score of 75, with Freeman winning on countback.

Emily Smith, also of Comberton, was the girls’ scratch champion with a gross score of 82.
