East Midlands: Gallacher inspires youngsters to league title
Former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher visited Marriott Breadsall Priory recently and inspired the club’s junior section to a league victory.
Gallacher was invited to the club by junior organiser Paul Smith, who last year received the Gallacher Award from the Golf Foundation as a result of his hard work.
Smith said: “Bernard gave up his own time to visit Breadsall Priory and the audience were captivated throughout the entire evening by talk of his remarkable achievements and stories.”
The eight-time Ryder Cup player suffered a cardiac arrest and was saved thanks to an on-site defibrillator.
He spent seven days in a coma, but since recovering has championed the placing of defibrillators in golf clubs.
‘The audience were captivated’ During her captaincy in 2010, Smith’s wife Michelle raised money for Marriott Breadsall to purchase a defibrillator, and during Gallacher’s visit he was presented with a cheque for £500 which will be donated to the Arrhythmia Alliance.
Smith added: “The evening was made even more satisfying for the junior section, that were inspired by his tips and stories and who went out two days later and became Derbyshire Junior League Champions.”
The junior team defeated Shirland in a closely fought contest which was only won by Breadsall Priory on the 19th hole of the last match.
“Congratulations to Breadsall Priory Juniors and overwhelming thanks to Bernard Gallacher for giving up his time to visit the club,” added Smith.
