WITB: Daniel Berger – St Jude Classic
Daniel Berger was one of Callaway’s big signings at the start of the 2017 season. He had previously used TaylorMade clubs and a Titleist ball.
At just 24 he is one of the rising stars of the PGA Tour who will no doubt be challenging for majors and a Ryder Cup debut over the next 18 months.
So as a flagship Callaway staff player there’s no surprise to see the GBB Epic driver and 3-wood in the bag.
When asked why he joined the company, Berger said: “Because of the equipment. And more than anything I wanted to play the new Epic driver.”
The 10.5˚ Epic driver – with the sliding weight in the neutral position – helped Berger to second place in strokes gained off the tee as he claimed a one-shot victory in the St Jude Classic.
What is most interesting about his gear is the fact he has three different irons in play. I’m calling it the Berger triple combo. I think they sell them in KFC.
For a bit more forgiveness at the top end of the bag he has the Apex CF 16 3 and 4-iron, he then moves into the sleeker Apex Pro for his 5-iron.
And for a bit more feel and workability, Berger uses the Apex MB1 (6-PW) – a similar iron to the one Callaway made for Rory McIlroy before he made the permanent switch to TaylorMade.
The stunning Mack Daddy Forged wedges are Berger’s choice around the greens with an interesting loft selection of 50˚, 56˚ and 58˚. Most fitters will recommend a gap of 4-6˚ but when you’re winning PGA Tour events you can do what you want.
Berger’s putter is an alignment-heavy Versa 2-ball which blends contrasting black and white lines and 2-ball features.
“With my 2-Ball, I feel good over it,” Berger has said of his gamer. “In testing, it was easy for me to line up and it’s been the most consistent. So that’s really why I have gone to it.”
And to complete the full Callaway set up, Berger uses the Chrome Soft ball – the company’s most successful ball of all time.
