Matthew Beedle takes a look at the best each-way bets and leading contenders for this week's event at Colonial Country Club

The details

The venue: Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas, USA

Date: May 23-26, 2019

Course stats: Par 72, 7,200 yards

Course summary: Colonial is a flat parkland which is heavily bunkered with tight tree-lined tee shots. Shotmakers will have success on this track. Accuracy is critical and the course doesn’t favour those who are longer off the tee. Water comes into play on around a third of the holes and there is a high probability that wind will play a factor.

Purse: $7.3 million

Defending champion: Justin Rose (-20)

Charles Schwab Challenge betting tips: Matthew’s each-way bets

Emiliano Grillo (50/1 with bet365) wasn’t in the best of form heading into the PGA Championship but he managed to grind his way to a top-25 finish, pretty impressive for a man short of form at such a tough course.

The Argentinean has improved on his finishes at Colonial year on year and finished third here last year.

Grillo is one of the straighter hitters on the PGA Tour and should be a safe bet to navigate himself round the tight tee shots this week.

Could this be the week we finally see Graeme McDowell (66/1) seal his Open spot?

The Northern Irishman has hit a good run of form as he goes in search of his Holy Grail of playing the Open in his home country.

Since his surprise win at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship he has had a string of good results. In his last appearance at this tournament in 2017 he finished in a tie for 29th.

Another player at the same price to McDowell is Joel Dahmen (66/1) who is enjoying a tremendous run of form on the PGA Tour.

He struggled at the PGA Championship last week but still made the cut, however, prior to that Dahmen had posted good finishes at various events, most notably finishing second to Max Homa at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.

The American recorded a top 20 at Colonial on his debut last year and will be looking to build on that this year.

Through his 4-iron to Gap Wedge, Matthew uses the Ping i500 irons accompanied by Ping’s Glide 3.0 56-degree and 60-degree wedges.

Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
