Why not Channel hop to Alderney?

Why not Channel hop to Alderney?

For an island that is just three and-a-half-miles long and a mile-and-a-half wide you'll be amazed at what Alderney has packed inside its charming and beautiful shores

Whether you arrive by one of the small propeller planes that regularly service the island, or for the more adventurous, charter your way there under your own sails, the first thing you’ll notice is that the pace of life instantly slows the minute you set foot back on terra firma.

To say that Alderney is one of the most relaxing and welcoming places in the Channel Islands is beyond an understatement, in fact it’s an ethos that runs throughout every aspect of island life. And while there is plenty to pack in here, there is always plenty of time.

For golfers, Alderney has it’s own course that would rival any links in the world with its breathtaking views of the local bays and out towards the English Channel and French coast.

While there are only nine greens, alternate tees make for a different challenge on the back nine leaving you ample opportunity to soak up the vistas for a very welcome second time.

Alderney Golf Club runs a number of open competitions throughout the year, including the Men’s and Ladies Championships in June with the seniors’ event being staged in September.

However, if you are visiting with friends who believe in Mark Twain’s adage; “Golf is a good walk spoilt”, more than 50 miles of footpaths take you on a tour of the coastline and crisscross the island, leaving you to explore a countryside brimming with flora and fauna.

In fact the entire island is easily accessible by foot and once you have taken in some of the most prominent landmarks and historical points of interest, a well-earned trip to St Anne – the island’s focal point and only town – is in order where you can relax in one of the many bustling cafes and bars.

Made up of cobbled streets, pretty pastel-coloured Georgian houses with bright window boxes and oozing a seaside ambience, whiling away the days with VAT free shopping in the town’s boutique stores will only give way to finding that perfect restaurant where you can indulge yourself in Alderney’s vast seafood gastronomy.

As a place that is blessed with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, the weather is rarely an obstacle that will stand in the way of repeating your perfect day time and again, all you are left to is decide of when you will make your first acquaintance with Alderney.
