All the evidence is pointing towards Catriona Matthew getting a second shot at captaining the European Solheim Cup team.
Matthew was at the helm in September as Europe dramatically regained the trophy at Gleneagles. Her team, needing 14.5 points to secure the trophy, were crowned when Suzann Pettersen’s clutch putt on the last fell.
Now, it looks as if the Scotswoman will have another go in 2021.
The LET will announce their captain at Gleneagles next month and this choice of venue is likely to be a nod to their selection.
Having competed in nine Solheim Cups as a player she was a popular choice for the 2019 role and after guiding the team to victory she was praised widely for how she performed.
Dame Laura Davies was one of Matthew’s vice-captains and believes that she deserves the chance to become the first European captain to record back-to-back wins.
“I think she’s nailed on, if she wants to do it,” she said. “I always think that, if you win, you deserve the chance to go and get the trophy back again.”
Aside from the fact that she was ultimately in charge of a winning side, Matthew clearly impressed Davies throughout the process and she spoke highly of how she went about things.
“The thing about Beany [Matthew] is that she doesn’t get too worked up about anything. That’s just her personality – and that rubs off on the players.
“Communication was good, everyone knew what they were doing at all times, She also had to make a couples of tough decisions… You have to be strong – and she is.”
