Phil Mickelson’s famous 3-wood
When Phil Mickelson walked onto the 17th tee on the final day at Muirfield, he knew that he needed to make a birdie on the monster par-5 to propel him into an Open Championship winning position.
The only problem, at face value at least, was that Mickelson had ditched his driver for the week and needed to carry 578 yards to make the green in two.
Fortunately, Lefty had something of a secret weapon in his bag – the Callaway X Hot 3Deep fairway wood. This revolutionary club has a shallower face which makes it easier to launch and the ball comes off the face at a ‘Characteristic Time’ rating of 240 – just five points less than the driver. This is done via a forged Speed Frame Face. The face is thinner, hotter and lighter.
The significance of this club is that it is both powerful enough to strike from the tee yet has the key characteristics of a good fairway wood for use directly off the turf.
So when Mickelson reached Muirfield’s 17th green in two shots, he hit both with his new Callaway fairway wood. It could quite accurately be described as the club which proved to be the catalyst in his Open Championship victory.
Commenting on the significance of the club, Mickelson said: “Not since I was 14 has any club changed my game like this 3 wood.”
