Bryson DeChambeau is the star attraction in Texas, but does NCG form expert Barry Plummer like his chances?

After another successful week, this time thanks to Rory McIlroy at the Wells Fargo Championship, we have another opportunity to pick a winner from a strong field at the AT&T Byron Nelson. As we gear up for Kiawah Island, players will be looking to fine tune their performances – so without further ado here is all the information you need…

AT&T Byron Nelson details

Venue: TPC Craig Ranch, Texas

Date: May 13-16, 2021

Course stats: Par 71; 7,438 yards

Course summary: This watery, tree-lined parkland track is a new venue for this event, replacing Trinity Forest after its two year stint as host. Players will need to give due consideration to the hazards on this course, with a creek that crosses the fairways no less than 14 times. Wind can also be a factor here but as a new venue for many of the players, recent form could be the key indicator for success this week.

Purse: $8.1 million

Defending champion: Sung Kang (-23)

AT&T Byron Nelson betting tips

As usual, I’m joined by NCG’s Steve Carroll to discuss my betting tips for the Valspar Championship on the Dialled In podcast. I’ve picked out three players who I fancy to go well this week.

You can listen to the podcast in the player below, or on your preferred podcast platform.

Bazza’s Banker: Bryson DeChambeau @ 10/1 with Bet365

After a recent win, and a top-10 finish last time out, DeChambeau certainly appeals here. A few long par 4s may cause problems for other players in the field, but Bryson will surely relish the opportunity to wield ‘The Kraken’ and go on the offensive. Interestingly, as well as his obvious advantage off-the-tee, DeChambeau has also putted extremely well of late, ranking in the top 10 on tour in the last three months. That will be important here, and with the PGA Championship coming up this could be a great warm up week for DeChambeau in a comfortable home environment.

The outsider: Scottie Scheffler @ 25/1 with Bet365

Scheffler has been knocking on the door since winning the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year award last season, and this could be a great opportunity to finally get over the line. Scheffler is a Dallas native, and was going well at the Valero Texas Open before a final round 72 derailed his hopes. A strong performance at the Masters recently demonstrates the class this guy has, and when you consider that he finished runner-up in the WGC-Match Play a few weeks ago, he will surely not be a maiden for too much longer. Scheffler can keep up with most off-the-tee, a key factor here, and has a relatively consistent game – ranking 19th for SG: Total this season. If Scheffler can get off to a hot start he may be difficult to catch in an environment where he will feel right at home.

The long shot: Cameron Champ @ 80/1 with Bet365

After a disappointing run of form at the start of this season, Champ appears to be finding his feet again and this could be a great week for him. Champ shone at the PGA Championship last season with a T10 finish, and with Kiawah Island just around the corner, it appears he may have hit form at just the right time. A T34 finish in the Valero Texas Open could have been better if not for a slow opening round, and as a Texas A&M University graduate he should enjoy playing at this new venue. Champ also ranks 4th for SG: Off-the-Tee this season, and could prove excellent value if he can continue his progress back to the sort of performances that saw him win two PGA Tour titles.
