Under Armour HOVR Tour SL Wide golf shoes

These Under Armour golf shoes were fantastic. From the moment I put them on to the moment I walked off the 18th green, they were class.

I have very big feet – size 11 to be exact. These shoes are long and roomy and this helped to keep my feet warm and protected from the wet and muddy ground I tested them in.

The UA Intelliknit upper is designed to combine “stretch, lockdown and containment throughout your swing.”

The soft rubber spikes replaced the more traditional spike design in these shoes and this didn’t take away any grip from the soft ground.

These shoes look the part and act the part and they definitely rival Under Armour’s other headliner footwear model in the UA HOVR Drive 2 Wide shoe.

PROS

  • Very easy to slip on and very roomy inside the shoe
  • The design is smart and simple
  • The grey colour scheme is impressive
  • The IntelliKnit upper provides great stretch throughout the swing

CONS

  • Light colour could be susceptible to muddy/winter conditions

FootJoy Pro SL golf shoe

The first thing I noticed on opening the box was the leather upper which felt really soft and supple. The overall appearance was of an athletic-looking shoe with a quality feel. It also felt very light. Indeed, on getting out the kitchen scales, this size 7.5 shoe weighed in at a lean 360 grams which is very much at the lighter end of the spectrum.

Prior to testing these shoes, I had gone for a FootJoy measuring. This had confirmed my size UK 7.5 (Euro 41) in a wide fitting. It had also found that my right foot was slightly smaller than my left.

When I first put these shoes on I have to say that my right foot didn’t feel as well supported as my left. However after a few holes this sensation disappeared and the shoes felt comfortable as long as I tied the laces up quite tightly.

There is a decent amount of padding around the collar and tongue of the shoe, and a look at the sole revealed 180 (I counted) rubber lugs making up the soft spikes. This is apparently an increase of 30% from the last model so as to enhance traction.

So this is another quality product from FootJoy that will have wide appeal; from young to old, from casual golfer to tour pro. I think that this is a well-constructed and comfortable shoe that performs well and comes in at a reasonable price point, considering the premium construction.

PROS

  • Premium leather upper.
  • Comfortable.
  • Performs well on & off course.

CONS

  • The Pro SL carbon is better.

Under Armour HOVR Drive 2 Wide golf shoes

The two-tone colour scheme, a fresh white that moves into a dark blue heel and cyan inner, is bold. And the technology that’s gone into them is evident from the second your feet slip in.

Under Armour say the moulded heel is ‘anatomically designed to improve support and fit’, while a similarly moulded EVA footbed ‘provides supportive step-in comfort’.

Let me be clear, these do not feel like conventional golf shoes. The ankle and heel support are something you’d expect from a running shoe and that gives you immediate confidence and an expectation of comfort.

This particular model is designed for those of us with wider feet and they do a really admirable job. There is no crowding of toes, nor do they feel tight and uncomfortable across the top.

With wide feet, and often restricted by what I can wear without going up in shoe sizes, I was intrigued to see if this model lived up its billing. They were fabulous – spreading across my toes without impinging on either the big toe or the tiniest digit.

Most modern golf shoes make you feel like you’re walking on padded cushions and these are no exception. But they also move through the swing. You don’t feel like your foot or ankle is being resisted by the shoe during the transition. It’s a flowing movement.

The spikes provided a good amount of traction and, given I was testing in some wetter conditions, there was never a hint that my footing might give way.

PROS

  • Moulded heel provides exceptional ankle support and comfort.
  • Wide fitting will appeal to golfers who struggle with standard shoes.
  • Soft upper and impressive traction allows the shoe to move with you as you swing.

CONS

  • Laces could be a little longer.

These come in loads of different colourways, so don’t get hung up on the two-tone upper. They are also available in spiked, spikeless, classic saddle or shield tip, so the options are many and varied.

These are FootJoy golf shoes, and their natural habit is the golf course. They are so lightweight. They are effortless to wear and you feel like you could run in them, alright well maybe not run, but certainly walk a long way in comfort. I keep coming back to the fit.

I do not want daft amounts of padding under my foot, I want to be able to feel the ground, and not feel like I am wearing stilts. Again the modest depth sole and the high levels of stability speak of a brand-making footwear for proper golfers.

The grip provided is also faultless, I played my first round in these in a typically British ‘light drizzle’ and experienced no slippage from the spikeless sole. I think if I had blind-tested these shoes I would pick them over any other as they feel like they are offering your all of the athletic support and performance you need with zero compromises on comfort or weight.

Depends on the 19th hole. At my home club of Alwoodley these were meeting with nods of approval that the golfing trainer can only dream of. I am not going to slip them on with a pair of jeans though. So I guess that goes back to personal preference.

PROS

  • A proper fit, like a golf shoe should fit
  • Trainer levels of comfort
  • Classic styling is a antidote to all the other on course off course carry on

CONS

  • Probs would not choose two tone

Sizes: UK 6-12 (inc. half sizes).

Colours: White / Khaki / Light Grey or Tan / Navy / Red or White / Navy or White / Black / Grey.

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

It is fair to say my first impression of this shoe out of the box was not the best. But this is more to do with my personal taste for going for plain colours and a ‘safe’ look.

I am normally a UK 12 but tried these in 11. Surprisingly they fit brilliantly and were perfect for my slightly wider foot as well. Then on to the important bit, how valid was my first impression?

By the end of the round, I have to say my mindset and impression of these shoes totally changed. You might not get a second chance to make a first impression, but you definitely get a second chance to totally change that first impression. I absolutely loved these shoes and even ended up loving the grey and red colours. I am a changed man!

The research and development that has gone into this shoe is clearly effective via the podiatrist certified arch support. There is a lot written about foot fatigue, and these shoes seem to have addressed this in a comprehensive manner. I can honestly say it is the comfiest golf shoe I have worn, combined with no issues at all when it comes to grip. Interestingly I am normally a UK size 12 but the size 11 fit perfectly well and so that might be something to consider when ordering.

PROS

  • Extremely comfortable
  • Great grip
  • Nice shape and styling

CONS

  • Pin stripe effect on the top may not be to everyone’s liking

Best Golf Shoes For Wide Feet 2024

As we wrap up our comprehensive review of the best golf shoes for wide feet waterproof golf shoes of 2024, it’s evident that these top contenders – the Under Armour Hovr Tour SL wide, FootJoy Pro SL, Under Armour Hovr Drive 2 wide, FootJoy Traditions and the Sketchers Go Golf Pro 5.

Each of these high-quality golf shoes brings unique strengths and impressive performance to the course, accommodating the group of golfers who need a little extra width in their shoes.

Your final choice will hinge on your personal comfort, playstyle, and budget. We suggest that you try these shoes on, if possible, to identify the best fit for you. Here’s to keeping your grip steady, your feet dry, and your style intact on the greens!

How do we test golf shoes?

At National Club Golfer, we are passionate about producing accurate and thorough reviews and making sure our testing process is rigorous so we get a good understanding of how each pair of shoes performs.

Each shoe is worn out on the golf course whilst playing golf, so we can get an idea of overall performance in terms of factors like comfort, grip, stability in the golf swing, waterproof protection and how they actually look on the golf course.

What is important when buying Golf shoes?

When buying new golf footwear its important to know what attributes or features you value the most before deciding on a brand or model to buy. For example, do you want spiked or spikeless shoes?

A lot of golfers think comfort is paramount when choosing a shoe, we are going to be standing in them for 3-5 hours right? Some comfortable golf shoes on the market have special insoles and cushioned mid-soles designed to keep your feet feeling fresh. Also it’s pretty common for golfers with wide feet to wear the wrong sized pair of golf shoes so its worth getting fit properly.

Grip is vital to good performance on the golf course as any foot slip in dry or wet conditions can not only cause the golf club to swing improperly but may also lead to an injury. Golfers need excellent traction.

Nearly all golf shoes will either be fully waterproof or offer some kind of water resistance, and this is important as real die-hard golfers play in every weather condition. Having wet feet for 4 hours is not and will never be fun.

How good the shoe looks is of course subjective to personal style, but is important to any player. Do you prefer an athletic-looking shoe, or are you more traditional? Does your shoe offer on-course off-course style or do you want shoes purely for the course? Does the style of shoe you like have the best colour options for your golfing wardrobe?

Price is the last factor to consider. With the models above we have tried to find shoes at all different price points so if you want a shoe at a lower cost, you can get one. Or if you want to spend more, you can do that too. Importantly there is something for everyone.

What brands produce the best golf shoes?

All of the products in this best golf shoes for wide feet 2024 article are picked from the brands that offer what we believe to be the best shoes on the market.

Do any pros wear spikeless golf shoes on tour?

As you will see on TV when watching the PGA, LPGA & DP World Tour, professionals wear both spiked and spikeless golf shoes, depending on their preference.

Some tour players are looking for extra stability and grip for maximum power creation that a spiked golf shoe might offer, and others are looking for the comfort and style that spikeless golf shoes offer. Some tour players prefer a running shoe style, and others a traditional classic leather shoe; there really isn’t a hard or fast rule as to what tour players wear.
