Peter Millar is quite rightly associated with well designed, high quality & comfort items. But it is also known for some quite punchy pricing. This item is no different & all you need to decide upon is whether you wish to fork out and invest in undoubted quality. As they say, buy cheap buy twice! 

The quarter zip mid layer is a brilliant addition to any golfing wardrobe. Some of the design additions are not to my personal taste – the block line design around the zip on the chest, for example – but that does not detract from the quality of the item. Yes, I would like a more classic/clean design with side zips rather than a chest zip but that is totally personal taste & as mentioned previously this should not detract from the quality of the item. 

As with other Peter Millar items the comfort stretch you feel with this item is there as is the lightweight feel. This means that if you had to take it off it would easily fit into your golf carry or trolley bag. 

And for those that don’t like ironing it has the easy-care benefits of washing on low and simply hanging to dry.

I own a lot of quarter zip jumpers, and this has gone straight into the rotation.

The charcoal heather grey colour goes with my whole collection of chinos and can be worn at pretty much any occasion. I like the blue, white and red colours around the zips to give it a little bit of style.

This particular jumper is slim fit, so you need to factor that in when picking your size, but that suits me and in particular I love the way it fits my forearms, there’s nothing worse than baggy sleeves overhanging your glove or grip.

It features G/Fore’s mossed interior which means the inside of the jumper is slightly thicker which will help keep you warm during the cooler months.

You will be seeing me in this jumper over the winter and you should pick one up for yourself too.

Ping Norse S5 Zoned Hooded Jacket

The hoodie is fast becoming the staple of a golfers wardrobe, if you are one of those golfers then the Ping Norse S5 Zoned Hooded Jacket would be a strong addition to yours, if not then you should jump on board the train. 

Where the Ping Norse S5 Zoned Hooded Jacket stands out from other hoodies is that it possesses more the characteristic of a jacket as opposed to a jumper. The quilted design provides additional insulation, though don’t mistake this as being overly warm, while the polyester material offers a water-resistant finish. A nice feature are the two zip pockets that come with a soft brushed lining, ideal for keeping your hands warm between shots. 

The quarter zip makes it is easy to slip on and the lightweight nature of the jacket means it can be comfortably worn over multiple layers. 

The hood is made of waterproof material which makes it very light but not so much that it becomes an inconvenience in the wind. Overall this Ping hooded jacket is a strong performer among its peers.

Full Zip Hoodie

This hoodie is part of the FootJoy ThermoSeries winter layering range and is new for 2023. It is constructed from brushed jersey knit fabric to provide a soft feel, open hand pockets, and a loose-fitting hood. The fabric offers thermal and moisture wicking properties. 

It comes in an ‘athletic’ close fit, but I was able to wear it over a couple of thin layers, and also stick a waterproof over the top. So it works well as a layering piece. 

On the course, it’s particularly comfortable and warm to wear I really liked the elastic hem which helps the hoodie to fit well. The open pockets are deep, and the hood is unobtrusive when swinging. It comes in two colours, both of which are a little plain for my taste, despite the contrast details at the hem, cuffs and zip. And for me the extremely casual look limits its useability. That said, it’s great to wear and of the usual FootJoy premium construction. If you like the look, then it’s worth considering as a practical winter layering piece.

FootJoy Thermoseries Brushed Back Midlayer

This half-zip midlayer is part of the ThermoSeries layering system from FootJoy, which was first released last year. It is constructed from a brushed jersey knit fabric which offers a soft feel, 4-way stretch and wicking properties.  

It comes in a choice of just two colours. I tested the version in heather seaglass, which is new for this season. I normally run a medium in FootJoy midlayers. The ‘athletic fit’ allows me to wear this over a baselayer or polo shirt, but not both. As a second layer it was very comfortable to wear, and easy to layer over. The breathability and moisture control was excellent. The fabric does feel to be at the thinner end of the midlayer spectrum, so it’s not the warmest midlayer but does have a good warmth to weight ratio. I liked the elasticated cuffs and hem of the garment, which provided a tailored fit.  

So, although I wouldn’t be reaching for this is really cold conditions, it’s the sort of layer that will be very useful for most months of the year. And it’s easy to stow away if the weather heats up.

The Adidas textured parka is a great layer to have at your disposal during the coming winter months.

It fits well under waterproofs and other layers or can be worn as an outer layer providing plenty of protection from the elements.

The inside is soft fleece which feels really warm and comfortable next to the skin, and the outer is water resistant keeping you dry during drizzle.

This jumper for me actually gives me the option to carry and wear fewer layers when its cold as it is so warm.

It features a horizontal zip pocket on the chest which Adidas say is for the scorecard but doesn’t feel overly functional, but the hood is adjustable and well fitted which gives you that added protection when you need it.

This jumper will get a lot of action from me this winter.

Glenmuir Biggar Cashmere Golf Pullover

In these days of hybrid technical midlayers, it is refreshing to see something that looks like a traditional golf sweater. But don’t be fooled by the looks because the Biggar packs a technical punch. 

Constructed from 95% ethically sourced combed cotton and 5% cashmere, the Biggar offers a soft feel, comfort, warmth and breathability. Further features include a PFC free, water repellent finish and Glenmuir’s signature anti-pill technology. 

It comes in a choice of three colours. I tested the charcoal/black with added visual interest provided by marine green sleeve stripes. The garment runs true to size – the medium fitted just right in all respects. It’s a delight to wear, feels very comfortable and soft next to the skin, and layers nicely. 

It’s also easy to care for and is sensibly priced. It comes highly recommended.

Abacus Men’s Kinloch Midlayer jacket

The Kinloch midlayer jacket is essentially a thin full zip midlayer. It is constructed from Drycool fabric, which is breathable, stretchy and wicking. The fleecy inner is brushed for added comfort. Elastic binding at the sleeve and hem of the jacket enhances the fit.  

I tend to run medium in Abacus midlayers and large in their jackets (or outerwear). The large size I tested was possibly a little too big for my non-athletic 74kg, 173 cm frame. I tested the version in navy, which has some sky blue/white contrasting stripes on the sleeves to give a sporty look.  

The Kinloch is a joy to wear. Because it’s so thin and stretchy, it’s easy to layer over and/or under. This makes it particularly useful in the variable conditions we’re so used to seeing in the UK. 

I realise that the casual sporty look may not suit everyone, but I loved it! I also loved how easy it is to pack away in my carry bag as the weather changes. It comes highly recommended.

Under Armour Storm Sweater Fleece Hoodie

Hoodies are one of the hottest items in golf with golfers searching for that casual look on the course, while feeling comfortable in the same clothes away from it. 

This is a great addition to anyone’s golf wardrobe, offering great warmth with the lightweight fleece material on the interior which also offers unbeatable comfort and it’s easy to layer up with the hoodie on. 

On top of that, one of the great features is the hoodie’s water resistance thanks Under Armour’s Storm Technology.  

This will be great to wear during the winter months but also come in handy during those cooler days or evenings during next spring and summer. 

Although the non-zipped hand pockets offer great warmth if you’re trying to protect your hands from the winter elements, I’d have preferred for a zipped option.  

This is a great pairing with the Under Armour Drive Joggers.

Adidas Oasis Sweatshirt

I spent a lot of time outdoors, playing golf, teaching golf, walking the dog, or any hobby I have. Recently (although very late to the party) I’ve become a huge fleece convert, only just realising how warm but versatile they are for any weather conditions.

The adidas grey funky fleece has a high elasticated neck that fits quite tight to keep the warmth in, as well as fitted cuffs on the sleeves. It is quite an oversized fit and baggy on the shoulders; I quite like the way it looks but others may want to size down.

This fleece has been perfect in test for me as I’ve worn it in pretty cool conditions. It fits nicely with a polo underneath, but I’ve opted a couple of times to just wear a base layer underneath for double the warmth.

You will see me wearing this fleece all winter long, be it on the golf course, teaching on the range or just out and about in town. I love the funky design and like all the different colour options.

Under Armour Storm Midlayer ½ Zip

My first impression of the Under Armour Storm Midlayer was that it would be the perfect addition to my autumn apparel collection, both with the colour option and the soft, yet warm feel of the midlayer’s fabric. 

The fabric is slightly thicker than that of a midlayer you’d typically wear during the summer months, when there is a slight chill in the air, which is thanks to Under Armour’s mid-weight Cold Gear technology which helps generate a soft, brushed interior and a smooth, fast-drying exterior. 

It can also withstand in the light rain due to Under Armour’s fluorine-free water repellent treatment while the ½ zip design, makes it easy and offers room for to layer up if needed or easily take the midlatyr on and off. 

This is certainly a piece of clothing I envisage getting a lot of use out of throughout autumn and next spring.

Under Armour Storm Sweater Fleece 1/2 zip

If you’re someone like me who prefers to layer up, often far too much, during the colder months, the Under Armour Storm SweaterFleece is a must-have in your golf collection. 

The SweaterFleece fabric offers a cosy feel with its soft, brushed interior which also creates great warmth. 

Water repellent thanks to Under Armour’s Storm Technology, you can be sure to count on on the Storm SweaterFleece during light showers on event snow. 

A feature that I’ve enjoyed on a lot of Under Armour’s winter clothing is their ribbed sleeve cuffs which prevent the sleeves from rolling down and interfering with your glove or hand. 

The half-zip allows makes it easy to get the Storm SweaterFleece on and off and layer up during the extra cold winter periods. 

The chest pocket is a great feature to keep your phone hidden from the winter elements, however, it would have been great to have hand pockets like its hooded counterpart.

Oscar Jacobson Oakways Hoodie

The Oscar Jacobson Oakways pull-over hoody is a great option for any golfer. Wearable on and off the golf course and looks smart. It feels great out on the golf course, works well as a layer for other garments and also extremely comfortable.

I prefer a hoody that sits tight to your neck and keeps everything out the way, especially when hitting golf shots. The adjustable toggle also assists with this.

Mobility wasn’t an issue either, whilst being slim fit it didn’t feel tight, and the material was stretchy enough to move and swing freely.

My only small qualm is I personally prefer a cleaner style instead of the mixture of colours across the body and arms – but that is just personal preference.

The marl sleeves are a cool addition, and I also like the general Oscar Jacobson branding across all the products this year. They all present subtly but are still obvious as to what brand it is you’re wearing.

Original Penguin Golf Heritage Quarter Zip

The Lightweight Heritage Quarter Zip Pullover is one of the nicest pieces of clothing in the Original Penguin AW23, and it comes in a range of colours.

All three colour patterns are good-looking, with the light-blue and grey combination standing out from the crowd.

The flexible performance fabric can provide warmth and comfort, perfect for a mid-layer. Along with comfort, the fabric also stretches nicely to the body, and the fact that the product is made from recycled materials is just another plus for this mid-layer piece of gear.

However, at £65, it is more than the average golfer might expect to pay for a product of this type. Add to that that this Lightweight Heritage Quarter Zip Pullover is quite thin, it might not be the right type of mid-layer gear for the winter months. In windy conditions, it can still be quite cold despite wearing this product.

Stuburt Javan Lightweight Top

Sometimes, during apparel testing you come across something that is just a bit different, and you wonder why it has never been thought of before. The Javan lightweight top from Stuburt  is one such piece.  

It is made from a polyester/elastane combination, with up to 12% elastane in parts, which makes it really stretchy. The fabric is windproof, breathable and has thermal properties.  Features include a quarter-zip construction with a front storm flap and top snap fastening, elasticated binding to the cuffs and an elasticated adjustable drawcord to the hem. There are also a couple of open front pockets which are usefully roomy. 

The medium size (my usual midlayer size) in the Javan fitted just right. I tested the version in a glorious royal blue. What I particularly like about the Javan is how it nails a casual yet stylish look. It’s also so lightweight you almost don’t know you’re wearing it which, of course, makes it a tremendous layering piece.  

It stows away compactly, comes in a choice of three colours and, as with most Stuburt kit, represents excellent value for money.

Oscar Jacobson Austin Quarter Zip Mid-Layer

Oscar Jacobson have just recently released the Austin quarter zip. An ideal cross-over garment for multiple weather conditions.

Lightweight, breathable and finished with premium Oscar Jacobson style. I tested the Austin on a sunny, but cool and breezy day which was ideal conditions for it.

Extremely lightweight so was accompanied well with a gilet and also a great option for some nice sunny weather but protects you from any breeze. It rolls up very easily so can be packed into your golf bag as insurance for the weather ahead or a nice comfortable addition to your outfit from the first tee.

The mobility of the garment was no issue, it allowed a full swing across all my clubs and didn’t get snagged on my golf bag with any excess material. Overall, a great garment to be added to your collection, It looks great on and off the course and is extremely comfortable.

Puma Cloudspun Colourblock Quarter Zip

The Puma Cloudspun Colourblock ¼ zip is perfect for any golfer looking for this style of top layer.

It is smart and the colour contrast of black and grey is very pleasing. It comes in a performance fit with the Puma Cat Logo on the left side of the chest.

The Cloudspun element provides a custom-milled performance poly-spandex blend while feeling like soft cotton. The material is stretchy which can be useful for golfers who are unsure of which size to go with.

The Cloudspun fabric also helps with comfort and this garment is perfect for a golfer looking to feel good and look good on the golf course.

This ¼ zip top layer is suitable for the autumn and even when it gets colder in the winter too. The sleeves provide a blend of soft feel and thick material that will no doubt keep you insulated during your round.

I was able to swing freely and feel confident while sporting the impressive Puma Cloudspun Colourblock ¼ zip.

Castore Golf Softshell Tech 1/2 zip

The Castore soft shell tech half zip is another great option from Castore for those like to layer up.

It offers a soft, comfortable feel but also sits nicely on your body so it doesn’t hamper your swing movement in anyway.

The zip pocket on the chest is a helpful addition as well, ideal for storing your phone, scorecard or anything you see fit. It is built with a breathable grid fleecing for warmth and water resistant trims which makes it the perfect fit for cooler weather (and frustratingly wet) weather. 

Overall I really like this garment, it is extremely comfortable, the design is smart and kept me suitably warm throughout my round of golf.

Whilst I do like the design, I can understand why it may not be for everyone’s taste with the multi site of branding on the arms, chest and back of the neck.

Galvin Green Durante – Insulating mid layer

Galvin Green’s Insulata fabric has been around for a while now, but its effectiveness remains undimmed. There is little better at keeping you warm in the winter months. The Durante mid-layer continues the tradition – locking in almost all heat and providing a much-needed barrier from the worst of it.  

There is quite a lot going on in this product and it is not the thinnest. After pairing it with extra layering, I did find some minor restrictions in swinging – even with its stretchy polyester/elastane mix. It was genuinely difficult to take off too but was well-fitted and sized when worn.  

In autumn and spring, this will also work admirably as a main outer layer. And while the padding on the shoulders and back is said to provide warmth where you need it most, it’s actually most effective as protecting those areas when you’re carrying because of the conditions. No more sore shoulders!

TravisMathew Coastal Cloud Hoodie

Though I am not a hoodie fan there is no doubt the hoodie trend is on the up amongst golfers and this is 1 of the best out there. I am also a fan of the copper colour!

The moment you unwrap this TravisMathew hoodie the thing you notice immediately is the quality and comfort of the item.

TravisMathew manage to produce a soft and stretchy item yet also one that keeps you warm. More importantly does not impede you at all when swinging the club.

The kangaroo pocket is great and I really like the subtle logo on the chest. You barely notice it but is a classy addition.

The hood itself you barely notice when playing, which is something I thought might be an issue, but if you do wish to put it up it really is comfortable and warm.

Overall, a quality item of clothing that I would be more than happy to wear on and off the course as is definitely not confined to wearing only when playing golf. I would be quite happy wearing this on a day or night out.
