This shoe looked smart, technical and perhaps a little aggressive, out of the box, particularly in the black version we tested. If Batman played golf, he would most certainly choose these shoes. They certainly look like they could handle any terrain in any weather.
The rear half of the shoe looks particularly interesting, with a 3D moulded heel, providing a stiffer and lighter rear structure to lock the heel in place. There is also a so-called A-frame support system which is an external TPU structure that fuses the heel and midsole together to deliver ultimate stability.
There are nine cleats which are situated right at the edge of the shoe such that the pods containing the cleats are visible when looking down on the shoe from above.
In the damp conditions and sloping lies the grip remained secure – my feet felt really planted to the ground and I cannot think of a shoe that has offered more grip. These are definitely one of the most stable shoes on the market.

The big talking point on these shoes is the custom moulded carbon fibre plate that sits in the sole. As an avid runner, I’m aware shoe companies have been adding carbon sole plates to shoes for a few years now, and I’ve wondered why they haven’t appeared in golf shoes yet.
FootJoy reckons that the Hyperflex Carbon offers increased stability than any shoe on the market now due to the carbon power plate. With ortholite impression fitbed and optiflex zones, the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon shoes should be stable and rigid in the golf swing but comfortable enough to wear all day.
I’m fairly comfortable commenting on how the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbons are pretty much faultless.
I cannot believe how strong and stable I feel in the swing wearing them. I’d go so far as to say these shoes have managed to wake me up and help me escape the spikeless shoe cult and have opened the door of proper golf shoe performance.

When I first put them on I really felt like my feet were locked in and secure in the boots.
The boots are made out of a soft premium full grain leather that you could wear, polish, and keep going forever. They feel pretty soft and have a nice fit across the forefoot, whilst designed with a slightly narrow heel to make you feel secure and stable when walking and in the swing.
The shoes performed very well out on the golf course. Like most golfers, I have owned many pairs of FootJoys over the years and they are always great so I expected nothing else out of the Stormwalkers. Interestingly I found myself not avoiding wet patches or standing water that I would normally stay clear of, and I also clambered up some slopes I would normally walk around facing no issue at all.
I had absolutely no issue with wet feet during this 3 hours in the rain, these boots have FJ’s standard 1 year waterproof warranty that I’m sure you could keep going for much longer if you look after them properly.

These FootJoy golf shoes feature FJs revolutionary versatrax outsole, which offers 360 degrees of grip and stability by angling what are essentially spikeless shoe nubs in different directions, which, combined with the actual soft spikes virtually guarantee that you are going to have no issue playing any shot from any lie during your round of golf.

FootJoy Pro SL Carbon

The Pittard leather upper offers a premium appearance and feel, and, of course, is waterproof. As with the Pro SL, it felt very light, particularly for leather shoes. This size 7.5 shoe weighed 370 grams which is just 10 grams more than the Pro SL, and still very lightweight. There was clearly more padding around the collar and heel of the shoe compared to the Pro SL.
The sole configuration at first glance seems the same as the standard Pro SL with 180 rubber lugs. But in fact, the Pro SL Carbon boasts a full-length carbon fibre insert into the midsole in order to provide, in FootJoy’s words, ‘exceptional stability and motion control’ and I did feel that the Carbon offered more torsional rigidity (or resistance to twisting) than the Pro SL.
The outsole configuration is the same as the Pro SL. The 180 rubber lugs, allied to the perimeter weighting of the proprietary outsole with 17% more surface area in the heel, all makes this a very secure shoe. The damp conditions we experienced during assessment tested the performance of the sole and there was no slipping or sense of insecurity even on awkward sloping lies.
