I have recently moved to the Humberside area so couldn’t wait to try out my new local course for a Brough Golf Club review and find out what East Yorkshire has to offer.

Brough Golf Club review: Where is it?

Just a few miles outside Hull, Brough is well served by the A63 and nearby M62, while Brough train station is less than half a mile away.

Brough Golf Club review: What to expect

The club celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2018, so it’s a matured course which is nicely settled with a compelling layout.

As you drive in, the imposing clubhouse will be the first thing that strikes you. It’s truly a thing of beauty and sets the tone for the day.

Having been purchased by the golf club in 1925, the building has been part of Brough’s history for the majority of its existence and has been maintained to ensure there is an area for golfer to relax that is befitting of the club’s quality.

Before heading to the 1st tee, there is an ample practice area. Make sure you get some time on here because the course is challenging throughout. It’s very tight on a majority of the holes, so it really is a thinking player’s track.

When we play so many courses that allow you to just pull the driver and grip it and rip it, it’s nice to play somewhere that asks for something a bit different. You’ll hit irons and hybrids off tees here more than you might think.

Brough Golf Club review: Favourite hole

The 11th hole is make or break and I love that about it.

A sharp dogleg left to a raised, hidden green is a real challenge and one that requires placement off the tee. There is a brilliant moment of uncertainty when you’re thinking, “What am I supposed to play here?”

A long iron is enough to leave a nice distance for the uphill approach and having left my approach short I was surprised by the amount of space that was on the upper level short of the green.

An exhilarating hole if you can play it well.

Brough Golf Club review: My best bit

I’m a big fan of a par 3, so when I found that Brough’s layout contained no fewer than five short holes, I was delighted.

Three appear on the opening nine and two on the way back in and the 9th was definitely a highlight for me.

From a slightly elevated tee, you play down a hole that feels narrow thanks to trees on either side into a bowled green.

As well as the course, take time to explore and absorb some of the history of the club in its magnificent clubhouse.

Brough is the epitome of a “second play” course, the kind of course you’ll play completely differently second time around.
