Titleist TSR2 Driver
Straight away I was blown away by this driver. I love how Titleist have made the club head more compact, it definitely has more of a player’s feel at address and makes you feel like you are going to be able to get the club head moving fast.
As it turns out, the re-shaping of the club head has made a massive difference in performance. I gained 3.5 mph of club head speed when moving from the TSi2 to the TSR2. That’s seriously impressive. It also meant I got some lovely carry distance gains.
The smaller design had less MOI meaning my off strikes weren’t as good as with the TSi2 and the spin was also quite low.
The TSR2 offers me the best of both worlds and one of the most impressive things was just how consistent my data was throughout testing. Ball speed, carry distance and direction was much more consistent than with my previous TSi3.

Callaway Drivers 2024
Paradym was extremely successful for Callaway in 2023, so this year they have kept the name but added a new twist. The new Paradym Ai Smoke range features four models, the Triple Diamond, Max, Max D and Max Fast.
Ai is one of Callaway’s superpowers when designing new equipment. It has brought us technologies such as Jailbreak, Flash Cup Face, and Ai-Optimised Club Faces. For 2024, Callaway has combined this with in-person player testing to drive the design of their latest drivers.
This year the all-new Ai Smart Face is the big Ai story. It uses swing dynamics data from thousands of real golfers to make the supercomputer Ai technology even more accurate. Swing speed, club delivery and face orientation just before impact have been fed into the computer to give it more information on how golfers present the golf club at impact and how the driver needs to perform to boost the performance of real golfers.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max Driver
The Paradym Ai Smoke Max is another great driver from Callaway that builds on the momentum of last year’s Paradym range.
I was content with an average of 229 yards carry, especially given the colder winter weather. I was also very pleased with how consistent the carry distance was across my testing.
Personally, it wasn’t the distance data I was most impressed with. I stood on the tee of the 232-yard 17th hole at Ganton and hit five balls straight onto the green with this driver! The consistency of ball flight was a lot better than with last year’s Paradym, and my dispersion grouping was incredible. Personally, accuracy is more important to me than extra yardage, and this driver stood out in this category.
Given the improved distance and accuracy, it seems like a no-brainer for this to replace my current Callaway Paradym driver.

Ping Drivers 2024
Ping are back for 2024 with an addition to their popular G430 range. the The Ping G430 SFT, Ping G430 LST and Ping G430 Max, are now joined by a more forgiving Ping G430 Max 10K model.

Ping G430 Max 10k Driver
This is going to be another hit driver from Ping. Just when we thought they couldn’t offer more forgiveness, they have upped the bar for 2024.
This driver allows bad shots to look good, which is something we all need more of.
Importantly, this driver doesn’t just deliver forgiveness. I also got great club head and ball speed data, making this a real all-around package.
Given the slightly larger profile, I expected my club head speed to slow down with the 10k model. As it turns out, this couldn’t have been further from the truth. My club head speed went up nearly 2mph on average, and I saw a 1mph ball speed increase.

TaylorMade Drivers 2024
The most forgiving family of drivers ever? TaylorMade claims to have unlocked a new frontier of forgiveness in their Qi10 lineup, so what’s new?
And what about the name? Qi stands for the Quest for Inertia, or to put it in a more understandable way, the quest to produce the best balance of speed and forgiveness. The Max model even toppled the 10,000 MOI mark for the first time in driver history.
TaylorMade Drivers: NCG Favourite
TaylorMade Qi10 Max Driver
I initially hit these drivers in South Carolina with Tomo Bysted, Senior Director of Product Creation at TaylorMade, to give me some insight and a fitting for all three Qi10 models.
I was really impressed with the high ball flight I got with this and the consistency of the flight. My ‘worst shot’ dispersion-wise finished only thirteen yards from my target, and from left to right, my dispersion was only 25 yards wide, which is absolutely insane. I’m not sure I have ever hit a driver so straight with a variety of strikes.
I was pretty pleased with the 141 ball speed average for 227.5-yard carry average, and I do think I could get more out of this in summer as it was about 6°C during our testing! I did hit the Qi10 LS slightly further, but for me I would happily give up a few yards to tighten my dispersion and help me hit more fairways.
This driver is going to make an impact in the golf market this year. It offers serious levels of forgiveness that could improve the game of all golfers, from high handicappers to tour pros.
It feels like a no-brainer for the majority of golfers to put this in play.

Cobra Drivers 2024
For 2024, Cobra is introducing three drivers as part of their new Darkspeed Metalwoods range. The Darkspeed family uses advanced aerodynamic shaping, meaning that every driver’s head has a different weight configuration designed to suit individual players’ requirements.
The Darkspeed range is Cobra’s first product to use AI technology. The Ai-designed H.O.T Face Technology has been used to create a face that has both optimised smash factor and ball speed data. From this, the reformed Pwrshell face insert is now 13% larger than the one found in the previous generation Aerojet drivers.
Not only has the face been upgraded, but so has the overall structure of the driver’s head. A multi-material chassis features a lightweight carbon crown, which is 30% thinner than the Aerojet driver. This lighter top is combined with sole plates and a reinforced titanium frame, which creates a more stable club head.

Cobra Darkspeed Max Driver
PXG Drivers 2024
PXG have been trending in the driver category over the last few years, growing in popularity with club golfers and on tour. This year is set to be their biggest yet with the launch of the brand-new Black Ops range.
The range is already in the bag of Major Champion Celine Boutier and has helped Eric Cole lock up PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

This is another great driver from PXG, which finds a great balance between speed and forgiveness.
For golfers who need more height, this is a perfect option as it provides incredible high launch.
During PXG’s research and development, they spent a lot of time looking at the connection between launch and distance. It is amazing how high this driver launches yet still keeps a low spin and good carry distances. For the majority of golfers hitting the ball higher is going to give you more hang time and lead to more carry distance so I wouldn’t be surprised if a huge amount of golfers see carry distances gains with this club.
In my fitting, I was hitting repeatable high draws, which is always nice to see! This is another great driver from PXG.

Mizuno Drivers 2024
If there’s one brand who’s clubs have undergone serious development in recent years, it’s Mizuno. Their drivers have come on leaps and bounds.
For 2024, Mizuno has added a new model to their ST 230 line-up. The new Max model aims to offer more forgiveness.
new line-up of drivers for 2023 includes the Mizuno ST-Z 230 and Mizuno ST-X 230, which, like year after year, are clean, classic and great-looking drivers.

Mizuno Drivers: NCG Favourite
Mizuno ST 230 Max Driver
This driver really impressed me as Mizuno managed to blend two different areas of performance that I didn’t expect.
This is the most forgiving model in Mizuno’s driver range yet it looks and feels like a players club thanks to the styling and brand new fast face material. When it comes to this driver, the ‘nothing feels like a mizuno’ statement still stands.
The height and towering ball flight this driver created was seriously impressive. I was launching the ball at close to 100ft with a 9.5° club head! If you are after more height on your shots this is one of the best on the market.
There is a serious story of forgiveness here; this club is easy to hit, forgiving on off-centre strikes and gets you easy carry distance. The new tech also means this is a pretty long driver too, one of the few where you aren’t sacrificing distance for forgiveness.

Wilson Drivers 2024
Wilson’s Dynapwr line continues into 2024 due to their two-year product cycle. The Dynapwr was a big leap forward for them in terms of technology, and that has shown more uptake on tour than ever before.

Wilson Dynapwr Carbon Driver
I really like the improvements Wilson have made in terms of styling this year. This is more compact and premium and will definitely suit that player and tour market more.
Across the board, the data is pretty optimal here. 235-yard carry is just where I like to see my driver, and the ball speed of nearly 140 mph from 93 mph of club head speed is very efficient.
My longest shot got up 242.6 yards, which is pretty much up there with some of the longest shots I have hit this year when testing drivers.
Overall, this driver is a really strong contender for Wilson this year, especially for the price point. Get ready to see a lot more of these in play on tour and at the club level.

So what is the best driver of 2024?
The best driver is very individual, there are so many good drivers on the market this year that will suit a wide array of golfers. But from testing there are a few that stand out for me.
The big focus across the market this year has been forgiveness, which matched what I was looking for in a driver this season. I have struggled with my driver consistency recently and want something to aid my confidence.
This is where the PXG made a huge mark. My fitting was incredibly detailed meaning I got the Black Ops set up in a way that felt super comfortable to me over the ball. The shaft is shorter, I have 3° more loft than they fitted me for last year and I love the look of the new gloss crown. Everything about this driver made me feel like I was ready to hit the fairway. So much of golf is psychological and having something that looks and feels confidence inspiring is key.
The Ping G430 Max 10k was the club that surprised me the most with its performance. The story was all about forgiveness, and I was concerned this would just be an easy-to-hit but short model. This could not have been further from the truth as this is a serious all-round package.
I got more club head speed and ball speed with the Max 10k compared to the standard G430 Max head which was certainly unexpected.
The real difference, though, is with the off-centre strikes. I actually felt I struck the ball worse with the 10k model, but still managed to get better data, which is definitely a win.
The TaylorMade Qi10 Max was seriously impressive from the get-go. I was really impressed with the high ball flight I got with this and the consistency of the flight.
In my fitting I was encouraged to intentionally hit shots out of the toe and heel to see the dispersion. I was honestly shocked by the results. The balls came out so straight on target that not only would they have hit the fairway, but they were accurate enough to hit a green.
My ‘worst shot’ dispersion-wise finished only thirteen yards from my target, and from left to right, my dispersion was only 25 yards wide, which is insane. I am not sure I have ever hit a driver so straight with such a variety of strikes.
Overall, this was a seriously close test and almost impossible to call a winner. PXG ended up in third place. I loved this driver and was really keen to game it, but the carry distance data was 5 yards shorter than the Qi10 Max and the G430 Max 10k and not quite as forgiving on the toe strikes that I am sometimes prone to.
That left me with the Ping and TaylorMade drivers head-to-head. The carry distance data was almost identical with the Qi10 Max carrying slightly further on my longest shots but not really enough to split the two.
Both drivers allow bad shots to look good, which is something we all need more of. This came down to really fine margins where I felt the TaylorMade was just offering more forgiveness and stability of ball flight across all my shots.

Best Golf Drivers 2024
When it comes to finding the best 2024 driver or fairway wood, it’s important to consider the top brands in the industry, including Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, Ping, Cobra, PXG, Wilson and Mizuno.
Each brand has a reputation for excellence and offers a variety of drivers and fairway woods to meet the needs of golfers at all levels. How do we test drivers?
At National Club Golfer we are passionate about producing accurate and thorough reviews and make sure our testing process is rigorous so we get a good understanding of how each club performs.
Each driver is hit with TP5 golf balls to allow us to collect launch monitor data with our in-house TrackMan and Flightscope. After this it is time to head out onto the golf course and test the clubs in practice and competition play. We do this across a variety of golf clubs in our base of Yorkshire.
What is important when buying a new driver?
When buying a new driver it is important to know what you want from that club to help you improve.
Most people are looking for more distance, each driver model is optimised for different things. Depending on your swing and your impact conditions, you may not actually hit the model that is advertised as the longest, the furthest. So if you want more distance it is always worth giving different models a hit before you make a decision.
For most golfers, especially high handicappers, something that is more forgiving is going to yield the best performance. Most forgiving golf drivers have a slightly bigger club head with perimeter weighting for high MOI. They also have a center of gravity that is further back to help players get more height on their shots.
Do you want something that is draw bias? There are so many models out there to help with slice correction, it would be silly not to take a look if you see your ball disappearing into the right trees too often. A closed face and draw bias weighting can get you hitting straighter shots in no time at all.
Don’t forget about the shaft either. Getting the correct shaft can help dial in your spin, launch angle and can also give you some extra distance. Having a club fitting or trying different options with your local pro can really improve the performance of your new driver.

How To Draw The Ball In Golf With a Driver
Learning to draw the ball and fixing your slice makes driving the golf ball a lot further, as not only will you hit it a lot further, but you will be able to control your ball better in the wind and on doglegs.
