An early preview of the Potential Favourites for the Majors in 2022

With the Masters right around the corner, now is a great time to have a look at the Major schedule for the 2022 season and preview what’s in store for us this season. This year’s Major schedule includes some of the world’s most iconic and famous courses, and it’s going to be a season to remember. As always, The Masters kicks off golf’s Major schedule at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia and this year will be held from April 7 to April 10. From May 19 to May 22, the PGA Championship will be held at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This year’s US Open is set to be played from June 16 to June 19 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, and the Major schedule finishes with The Open from July 14 to July 17, which will be held at St Andrews (Old Course) in Scotland. With many states embarking on legalisation of betting in the US, we could see more casual fans tuning in, wanting to place a bet on the winners. In this article, we preview next month’s Masters, as well as the potential breakout stars for the 2022 Majors, and players to look out for.

Who is the favourite to win the 2022 Masters?

The Masters is always a massive event on any golf fan’s calendar, and we are now counting down the days until the 86th edition of the famous Major kicks off. The mystique of the perfectly groomed Augusta National makes it one of the highlights in the golfing calendar, and it is renowned as one of the hardest courses to play on. The world’s best golfers will be competing and will have to be at their absolute best if they are to win the championship and to have the iconic green jacket put on their backs on the Sunday afternoon. There is also a purse of $11.5 million on offer, with the winner taking home $2.07 million. Japanese number one Hideki Matsuyama is aiming to be the first man since Tiger Woods in 2001/02 to win back-to-back green jackets, but he isn’t among the current favourites.

The bookies’ favourite is currently Jon Rahm, who is aiming to become the fourth Spaniard to win in Augusta. The World number one is seen as having a game that is well suited to Augusta National and has finished in the top 10 in his past three Masters appearances. Fan will be keeping a keen eye on Rory Mcilroy to see if can finally complete his Major grand slam after years of waiting, having won his last Major in 2014. As with every big golf tournament, there will be fans wanting to see if Bryson DeChambeau can put a show on for the crowd with his monster drives and exciting game, and if he can get it right, there will be very few who can get close to him as he bids for a second Major win. In recent years, the ‘major machines’ Brooks Koepka and Colin Morikawa have had the ability to turn it on when the lights shine brightest, and will both be looking to add to their Major tallies with first-time Masters wins. Also, as always fans will be hoping for Tiger to recapture some of the magic we saw in 2019 when he ended his Major drought. He is seen as an outside bet for this year’s tournament, but you can never count the great man out.

Who could win their first Major in 2022?

The standard on both the PGA and European tour is extremely high, and there’s some great players who are still on the hunt for their first Major. World number 23 Tony Finau has come close on multiple occasions to winning a Major, but hasn’t quite got over the line just yet. In early 2021, he went on a stretch of five weeks where he finished in the top four in all four tournaments that he entered, so is capable of hitting sustained form, which could put him in good stead this season. Patrick Cantlay had a fantastic 2021, picking up three PGA tour wins on his way to fourth in the world. Many believe it is just a matter of time until Cantlay wins a Major, and 2022 could well be his year. Olympic gold medal champion Xander Schauffele has a knack of performing well on the big stage, highlighted by his six top 10 finishes at Majors in just eleven attempts. He was just two shots behind the leader coming to the 16th hole of the final round at Augusta last year, but triple bogeyed the hole and ended up tying for third place. Given how we know Schauffele can perform at Majors, 2022 could absolutely be the year he finally tops the leaderboard at one of the big events.

Who are the young stars looking to win their first Major this year?

There are some hugely talented young men on the tour already performing at an extremely high level, and there are three players in their early twenties who will be hoping to lift the first Major trophy of their careers this upcoming season. Norway’s Viktor Hovland’s brilliant 2021 and early 2022 has shot him up the world rankings to number three, and his wins at last year’s BMW International open and the Dubai Desert Classic in January have shown he is capable of winning big events. His brilliant Major performances as an amateur thrust him into the spotlight, and he has carried that on as a pro. He is one of the most in-form players in the world at the moment, and a Major could be right round the corner. South Korean Im Sung-Jae is just 23, and the 2019 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year is seen as one of the future stars of the sport and is one to watch on the Major calendar this year, as is 22-year-old Matthew Wolff, who burst onto the scene in 2020 with two top five Major finishes. His unorthodox ‘baseball’ swing has garnered a lot of attention from fans, and he will definitely be one to keep an eye out for this upcoming season.
