Alfred Dunhilll Championship betting tips: Who will light up Leopard Creek?

Who will be victorious in South Africa? Oddschecker’s Tom Jacobs has three picks to win the 2022 Alfred Dunhill Championship

The DP World Tour remains in South Africa for a third straight tournament this week for the Alfred Dunhill Championship. Co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour, the event will once again be played at Leopard Creek, the venue which has hosted more DP World Tour events than any other course in South Africa. Keep scrolling for my betting tips on the 2022 Alfred Dunhill Championship, but first…

2022 Alfred Dunhill Championship details

Venue: Leopard Creek Country Club, Malalane, South Africa

Dates: December 8–11, 2022

Course summary: Designed by Gary Player, the picturesque Leopard Creek overlooks the magnificent Kruger National Park. The course features an undulating layout full of trees, bushes and fast-running fairways. Water also comes into play on eight holes, so avoiding them will of course be crucial.

2022 Alfred Dunhill Championship betting tips

Daniel Van Tonder @ 50-1 with Bet365

Daniel Van Tonder has ranked 1st and 3rd in SG Approach, and 2nd and 5th in SG Tee to Green among those making the cut the last two weeks, and it’s that ball striking prowess, and the fact he lifts his game immensely when playing at home, that makes him an intriguing prospect this week.

In his last eight starts at Leopard Creek, Van Tonder has missed four cuts so on the surface it looks like a rough tough test for him, but when he does make the weekend, he’s finished 6th, 15th, 16th, and 39th here, so there is reason to suspect he can play well when in good form.

Van Tonder was 3rd two starts ago at the Joburg Open and while he could only finish 64th in his home Open last week, he did hit the ball beautifully once again, and if he keeps that up, I think he can contend in the third and final leg of the Sunshine Tour swing this December!

He looks slightly overpriced given he has 8 wins and three playoff losses in South Africa, and also has ticked off a DP World Tour victory, at the Kenya Savannah Classic.

Ryo Hisatsune @ 66-1 with Bet365

Ryo Hisatsune has the potential to be the best rookie on the DP World Tour this season, and could find himself on a pretty steep trajectory when it comes to climbing the Official World Golf Rankings this season.

His performances over in Australia have done little to dampen that belief over the past fortnight, as he finished 2nd behind Cameron Smith at the Australian PGA Championship, before finishing 31st last week, at the Australian Open.

Hisatsune was on track for back-to-back top 10s, sitting 7th going into Sunday last week, but a final round 76 saw him tumble down the leaderboard, and I am happy to concede that it came down to him being aggressive and chasing another top-5 as opposed to anything else.

The Japanese start has ranked 10th and 17th the past two weeks in SG Approach and was 5th and 15th in SG Tee to Green. Both numbers would have improved further last week, were it not for just one round, so I truly believe he can step up his game once more.

Already a three time winner on the Japanese Challenge Tour before the age of 21, Hisatsune has seemingly stepped up to the next level with ease, posting 8 top-10’s in 2021 and 2022 across the Japanese and Asian Tours.

He played in his biggest event yet, when teeing it up on the PGA Tour for the ZOZO Championship in October, where he finished T12, just one shot outside the top 10. That is another sign he’s here to stay, especially at lower grade events such as this, and this could be the start of a coming of age season for the young star from Japan.

I think he may look back at the end of this season and realise we had a chance to get on him early at events like this, and I won’t overlook him at 66-1 in a weak(ish) field.

Ross Fisher @ 66-1 with Bet365

Ross Fisher is hitting his irons incredibly well right now, ranking 8th or better in each of his last four events in SG Approach, including when 5th last week in that category. Add to that, that he’s ranked 32nd or better and twice inside the top-9 in SG Tee to Green in that span, and he’s clearly striking the ball well.

Fisher now returns to a golf course where he finished 3rd albeit way back in 2013, and given the most recent of his five DP World Tour victories came in South Africa, he has a clear affinity with this part of the world.

The Englishman has not finished outside the top 23 in any of his past four starts, and even last week, which was his worst effort in that span, he opened with a 65, to sit 2nd on day one.

Maybe one better suited to taking in the first round leader market, I do at least think Fisher is worth chancing for some place money, as he looks to make one last run in his career.

If 2022 is anything to go by, Fisher seemingly has plenty to offer still at this stage of his career, and it would be great to see him breakthrough once more.
