Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Fantasy Golf picks

The European Tour returns to the golfing calendar as it heads to Abu Dhabi for the first event of 2019.

Tommy Fleetwood is looking to win his third Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in a row after outstanding victories in 2017 and 2018.

The Englishman’s back nine of 30 on the final day meant he closed with a round of 65 to defeat fellow countryman Ross Fisher by two strokes.

The aim of our fantasy game this year is to pick the right players to match the RankBuster. This week’s is set at 200 so who can you fit in your team to beat it? Here are my Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Fantasy Golf picks.

Tyrrell Hatton temper

Tyrell Hatton

Fantasy Rank: 5

It’s hard to ignore a player with Hatton’s ability. The Englishman has been in and around the leaders in the last two years at this event, finishing inside the top 15 on both occasions.

In 2017, Hatton was in the lead heading into the final day but a round of 75 meant he slumped to T13.

Alexander Bjork

Fantasy Rank: 26

The Swede had a fairly patchy 2018 with a mix of top 10 finishes and missed cuts. Bjork also struggled here last year, narrowly missing the cut, but his T13 finish in 2017 is enough to show that if his game is on this week he is capable of finishing well.

Alexander Levy

Fantasy Rank: 34

Levy had good year in 2018, winning the Trophee Hassan II and finishing inside the top 10 on five occasions. The Frenchman performed well here last year, ending up in solo seventh place.

Ryan Fox

Fantasy Rank: 37

Fox has had a good run in his last two starts at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship with a T32 and a T19 finish. It’s also worth noting that Fox has only missed three cuts since the start of April.

Adrian Otaegui

Fantasy Rank: 40

Otaegui had an impressive end to 2018 on the European Tour with a T3 finish at the Turkish Airlines Open, tied-16th at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and tied-4th at the DP World Tour Championship

However, his best display at this event in the last three years is a T40 finish last year so pick with caution.

Jorge Campillo

Fantasy Rank: 58

The Spaniard didn’t have a great end to 2018, closing with three finishes outside the top 30 but Campillo has improved year on year at this event. He was in the mix last year after opening rounds of 69 and 64. However, weekend rounds of 72 and 70 meant he was unable to make a run at the title.

Matthew Beedle

Matthew has been playing golf since he was around 13 and took up the game at a local nine-hole municipal course with his friends before joining Pontefract & District Golf Club just over the hedge.

Still a member of Pontefract with a handicap of 3, he currently sits on the board of directors to help with digital and marketing initiatives in order to improve membership and visitor income.

Matthew graduated university with a First Class in Sports Journalism from Leeds Trinity University and has been working in the golf industry since graduating.

NCG’s social media & marketing manager, Matthew’s main job role is to increase website traffic to the National Club Golfer website via our email and social media channels as well as driving entries to grow our NCG Top 100s Tour events amongst other tasks.

Not one to change his equipment too often, Matthew currently plays the TaylorMade M2 driver which has lasted the test of time in his bag. Elsewhere, you’ll find him using the TaylorMade Stealth 2 three-wood with a Ping G425 Crossover 2-iron to aid his long game.

Through his 4-iron to Gap Wedge, Matthew uses the Ping i500 irons accompanied by Ping’s Glide 3.0 56-degree and 60-degree wedges.

Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
