5 PGA Tour players who could finally win a major in 2020
The 2018-19 PGA Tour season is nearly finished and the circuit’s four major tournaments have already been put to bed. With the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship in the books, we begin to look ahead to next season’s major events. There is a long list of top PGA professionals who have not yet won a major tournament. The 2020 major season could see a major victory go to a new man when the big four tees off.
John Rahm
John Rahm is just 24-years old but it feels like he has been around for some time now. Rahm burst onto the PGA Tour in 2016 with some impressive performances following his collegiate career at Arizona State.
He has won three PGA Tour tournaments already along with four more event wins on the European circuit. The Spaniard’s best major finish came in 2019 at the US Open when he came third. In 2017, Rahm finished ranked fifth on the money list which shows just how much promise he has.
Rickie Fowler
Golf fans may not realize it, but Rickie Fowler has never won a major tournament. The five-time PGA Tour event winner has finished as a runner-up in three different major tournaments.
The 2018 Masters was his last major tournament runner-up finish. This year saw Fowler win his first PGA Tour event since 2017.
Xander Schauffele
Xander Schauffele finished second at this year’s Masters tournament achieving his second-best finish at a major event. It tied his second-place finish the previous season at The Open Championship.
Schauffele just can’t get over the hump of second place. He has won four times on the PGA Tour with all four wins coming between 2017 and 2019.
Ian Poulter
Englishman Ian Poulter has tallied 21 professional tournament wins. However, he has never won the big one, or any of the four big ones for that matter. Poulter came so close in 2008 on home soil at The Open Championship. He just missed the win, however, finishing second at Royal Birkdale.
Poulter’s PGA Tour wins have dried up in recent years. He did win the Houston Open in 2018, but it was his first tournament victory since 2012 at the WGC HSBC Champions event.
Matt Kucher
Yet another nearly man who has been close to winning a major tournament. Matt Kucher has tallied 15 tournament wins in his professional career. Not one of those has been a major event.
In 2017, the American golfer finished second at The Open Championship. He lost out to Jordan Spieth at Royal Birkdale continuing his drought.
Now 41, Kucher’s window for winning a major tournament may be closing. Kucher did record a PGA Tour win in January 2019. On his day, he can still play with those players nearly half his age.
