Wrexham Golf Club is one of the northeasternmost venues on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list, close to the Welsh border with England. 

 

The course is set with the backdrop of the rolling Welsh hills and plays through tree-lined fairways. James Braid was the original course designer when it opened in 1905. 

 

In more recent times, the course has played host to several major Welsh and British competitions, including the Ladies Home Internationals and the Welsh Club Championship.

Wrexham Golf Club was officially founded in 1905, and over the first 45 years, there were six different iterations of the course. It was originally designed by five-time Open Champion James Braid. 

 

The Gresford, Gwersyllt, Stansty and three versions of the Borras were all used up until 1950, when the final Borras 18-hole course was opened.  

 

Over the last five decades, Wrexham Golf Club has played host to the British Girls Championship and Ladies Senior Championship, along with the Welsh Club Championship and the Ladies Home Internationals – the latter on two occasions.  

The course at Wrexham Golf Club has the backdrop of the rolling Welsh hills and plays well throughout the year. The course is one of the shortest you will find on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list, coming in at just 6,100 yards. The Par 70 course is split into a long front nine and a short back nine, with the closing side of the course being 500 yards shorter than the first half.  

 

The opening hole at Wrexham is one of just three par 5s on the course, and the second longest hole. It is 515 yards from the tips and can be reachable in two for the longer hitters. 2 and 3 are strong par 4s by the course’s boundary with the nearby quarry. The 4th is the shortest hole on the course, and the first of five par 3s at Wrexham. The 8th is the other on the front nine, with just a single bunker on the right side of the green.  

 

6 is the longest hole on the property, but at less than 520 yards, the longer hitters will still be looking to try and reach the green in two. There is a split fairway, which may put some people off from going for it. The closing hole on the front side is a shorter par 4, with five greenside bunkers ready to catch any errant shots. Around the turns, there are birdie opportunities, with the par 3 10th and the dog-leg par 4 11th. 12 is the last par 5 and at less than 500 yards, it is one that will certainly be eyed up by the bigger hitters.  

 

13, 15 and 16 are short par 4s and provide birdie opportunities, while the 14th and 17th are the last two par 3s on the course. The penultimate hole on the course is the longest par 3 at Wrexham, measuring almost 190 yards from the back tees. Bunkers either side of the green are ready for anything errant. Wrexham’s closing hole is a dog-leg left and the longest par 4 on the closing nine. It is a tough finishing hole, and one where a par is a great score to walk off with.  

Where is Wrexham Golf Club located?  
Wrexham Golf Club is in the northeastern section of the country, just outside the city of Wrexham itself. It sits on the corner of the A5156 and the A534, giving Wrexham Golf Club brilliant links for those driving to the course. The course is only four miles from the Welsh border with England.  

 

Both Wrexham General and Wrexham Central are the nearest train stations to Wrexham Golf Club, with the latter being at the end of the line. Central offers train services to Bidston on the Wirral, while General is the main station in the city. Avanti West Coast runs trains from Wrexham General to London Euston, with trains also running to Liverpool Lime Street, Shrewsbury, Chester, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and Holyhead.  

 

In terms of air travel, both Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport are within a 45-minute drive from Wrexham Golf Club. The latter is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom outside of London.  

What golf facilities does Wrexham Golf Club offer?  
Along with the championship golf course, Wrexham Golf Club also has practice facilities for golfers to warm up before a round. The range is 150 yards long allowing for short iron and wedge practice, while the putting green is in front of the clubhouse and next to the 1st tee.
