Winterfield

It is the 'second' course in the town of Dunbar and rarely finds itself under the spotlight, but Winterfield will bring a smile to the face of even the most dour of visitors.

It starts with a frankly ludicrous long par 3 that makes you think you are in for a robust round... but from that moment on charms you with every hole.

The opening phase sits on higher land next to the clubhouse and comprises pleasant holes and fabulous views. So far, so good.

But then you hit the back nine and the pulse is raised significantly.

It includes the 14th, a par 3 to rival any in feted East Lothian. It plays from an elevated tee across a small part of Belhaven Bay to a green out on the point. Exacting but brilliant.

The turf isn't the most firm on this celebrated coastline of Scotland - and few have better than its neighbour in the town - but it still offers great surfaces. Chris Bertram
