Wenvoe Castle Golf Club is set in the grounds of Wenvoe Castle, with the course looping around the building which is several centuries old. 

 

The club was founded in 1936, and it was James Braid – the five-time winner of the Open Championship – who was the man to design the golf course. 

 

Playing 6,500 yards from the tips, and with plenty of undulations and splendid views, Wenvoe Castle is a good test of golf for players of all abilities.

Despite being founded in 1936, Wenvoe Castle Golf Club is still one of the younger venues on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list. 

 

Coming up to a century’s worth of history, the club was designed by five-time Open Champion James Braid and runs in two loops around Wenvoe Castle. 

 

The building that the clubhouse is housed in dates back much further than that. The Grade II listed building has been around for around 250 years, dating to 1776. 

Not for the first time on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list, we have a stunning James Braid design to talk about. The course is split into two nines around the castle itself, with the front nine to the northwest of the castle, and the back nine on the southern side. Undulating fairways, tough greens and tree-lined fairways are all part of the test at Wenvoe Castle. The Par 72 course plays at 6,500 yards from the tips, and just over 6,200 yards from the yellow tees. 

 

The course opens with a superb par 5 that sees you tee off from an elevated tee to an undulating fairway, leaving you two shots to make the guarded green. Get on in three, or even two, and you've done very well. The 2nd is the shortest hole on the course at just 117 yards, but with three bunkers guarding the green, there is plenty of danger around on this par 3. The 3rd and 4th are both short par 4s, the latter being drivable at 300 yards. The 5th is the shortest of the three par 5s at Wenvoe, measuring just 465 yards. It is one of the narrowest driving holes on the course, but if you find the fairway, then it is a great birdie chance.  

 

6 is a short par 4 with out of bounds back right of the green, while the 7th is the hardest hole on the course. It doesn’t look like there is much to the hole, but the green is the shallowest on the course at just 18 yards deep. The tough holes continue with the 488-yard par 4 8th. Longer than one of the par 5s, this is a true test of length and accuracy. The front nine closes with a 180-yard par 3 which is played over water. Don’t worry, the water hazard in front of the tee box, but it is still a tough hole. 

 

10 brings water into play properly. This 400-yard par 4 is split in two by a large pond, with golfers having to lay up and then hit a mid-to-long iron into the green. Two short par 4s follow, with the 12th being less than 300 yards from the tips. 13 is the longest hole on the course at 546 yards. Narrow and tree-lined, an accurate drive must be gotten away if there is to be any chance of attacking the green. The 14th is then the hardest hole on the back nine, while 15 is a 200-yard par 3.  

 

If you make it through that tough stretch of holes unscathed (or at least with the same golf ball you started them with) then you come to the final three. 16 is a long par 4 of more than 400 yards, while 17 is a dog-leg left where the drive has to get past the trees that jut out into the left side of the fairway. The closing hole at Wenvoe is a tough hole, but if you find the fairway then there is a good chance that the ball will roll down the slope to make it a shorter approach. The green is square, and if you can find it, then there could be one final birdie chance.  

Where is Wenvoe Castle located?  
Wenvoe Castle Golf Club is in southern Wales, around six miles from the nation’s capital city of Cardiff. Wenvoe and Gibbons Down are the nearest towns to the golf club, and the course is on the corner of two main A–roads – the A4231 and the A4050, offering good road links for those from further afield. 

 

Cadoxton is the nearest train station to Wenvoe Castle, situated around three miles from the course. Trains run through Cadoxton on the Vale Line. There are frequent services to Cardiff Central and beyond to the east, with trains from Cadoxton visiting Barry, Rhoose and Bridgend to the west.  

 

For international travellers looking to play Wenvoe Castle, Cardiff Airport is just five miles to the southwest of the golf course. The airport is the biggest in the country, while Bristol Airport (around 55 miles away by road) is inside the top ten airports in the United Kingdom in terms of passengers it sees through its doors each year. 

What golf facilities does Wenvoe Castle offer?  
Away from the golf course, there is plenty of space for golfers to get their practice in before a round. There are two practice grounds, along with a putting and chipping green, with the short game area being by the 1st tee box.
