Trump Ireland

Trump Ireland | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

It is the second Trump-owned resort in the top six on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, and you can immediately see why. Trump Ireland (affectionately known as Doonbeg) has a world-class links course, one of the best courses you will find at any of the resorts on this list. There is also a beautiful hotel and cottages, and those incredible sea views out over the Atlantic Ocean.

After being purchased in 2014 by the Trump Organisation - and following a name change to Trump International Golf Links, Doonbeg – Dr Martin Hawtree was drafted in. Hawtree made significant changes to the original Greg Norman course design, and it is now one of the best places to play golf in Ireland, with Atlantic Ocean views from 16 of the 18 holes on the golf course.

Away from the golf course, there are plenty of other activities for guests to enjoy and get involved in. The 1.5-mile beach provides the perfect place for runners, and for those who just fancy a stroll with sea views. Cycling and horse riding are also popular, while clay pigeon shooting and dolphin watching tours are just some of the things that the Trump Ireland Resort offers for its guests.

The accommodation, as you would expect, is pristine at Trump Ireland. Even the standard Classic Rooms are laced with luxury. Both the Courtyard and the Links Cottages provide views of the Atlantic while guests can enjoy comfort, with a range of rooms and suites, all the way up to four-bedrooms.

Trump Ireland Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Golf by the Atlantic

It is the only venue on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list that can claim to have views of the Atlantic Ocean. The resort provides those views from 16 of the 18 holes on its championship course. Original designer Greg Norman was proud of his lay-out amongst the dunes, and it was he and Padraig Harrington that opened the course in July 2002 with a friendly match, that the Australian won.

“It may be under 7,000 yards, but it will test any player in the world under any conditions.” - Greg Norman

The resort was purchased by the Trump Organisation a decade ago, and was renamed Trump International Golf Links, Doonbeg. Since then, Dr Martin Hawtree, who has become Trump’s go-to man when it comes to golf course design, and his work has made the Doonbeg Links into one of the best courses in Ireland. The course spans one and a half miles of the crescent shaped beach and plays beautifully amongst the dunes.

The Par 72 lay-out has five par 3s and five par 5s, and a range of tees to allow for golfers of all abilities to enjoy their round at Trump Ireland. The opening hole is the first par 5 of the round, while the 4th is the longest hole on the property. It measures more than 650 yards from the tips, and still 580 from the whites.

The 9th is the second par 3 on the course and is one of the signature holes at Doonbeg. With the beach just a few paces to your left, you are challenged to hit an accurate shot whilst being at the mercy of any wind in the area. Find the green and you will be incredibly happy! The short 14th is the other, playing just 138 yards from the back tees, downhill towards the Atlantic Ocean. With the waves crashing onto the beach on your right, the obvious play is to the left of the green.
