Tecina

Tecina | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Tecina is not just the leading golf resort on La Gomera, it is the only golfing venue on the island! The resort is one of the best in the Canary Islands on the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list, with a championship golf course that works its way down to sea level, a beautiful hotel on the coastline and a glorious spa facility.

The golf course is the only one on the island, and it begins more than 240 metres above sea level, before working its way down the hillside towards the Atlantic coastline. The card says 6,900 yards, but due to that elevation change, Donald Steel’s design does not play that long. The course has played host to the European Challenge Tour on eight occasions, with some DP World Tour and PGA Tour stars having won the event.

As well as the golf course, there is also a stunning Golf Academy at Tecina, where Head Professional Christos Sakorafas provides the tutelage. The practice facilities at the Academy include a stunning driving range, and a great short game area. Sakorafas offers lessons for both individuals and groups, with those being taught in one of four languages.

The Hotel Jardin Tecina provides well-decorated rooms and incredible views for golfers and guests alike. The array of options ranges from the Standard Room, through Comfort and Superior Rooms, all the way up to Junior Suites and the Duplex Suites. There are also a number of Family and Family Maxi Rooms for bigger groups.

The Hotel is also the home to the Spa Ahemon, named after the Guanche translation for water. The spa and wellness facility includes a steam bath, bithermal shower and a holt/cold shower, while the open air swimming pool provides even more incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and Tenerife’s El Teide as the backdrop.

Tecina Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Tecina Golf Course

The Tecina Golf Course is situated on the Lomada de Tecina and there are incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and El Teide, the volcanic mountain which is located in the middle of the island of Tenerife.

The course itself begins at the very northern point of the resort, at 240 metres above sea level, and works its way down to the coastline. In total, there is a drop of 170 metres from the first tee to the 18th green. The Par 71 course was designed by world-renowned golf courses architect Donald Steel, and it measures more than 6,900 yards.

The closing hole on the front nine is a driveable par-4, at just 265 yards from the back tees. Four bunkers and a waste area to the right of the green might deter golfers from having a crack, though. The 14th is almost as far, but it is a par-3, where players will be happy to come away without dropping a shot. By the time you’re down towards sea level, 16 and 18 are both tough par-4s, while the penultimate hole is a par-5. At only 502 yards, it is a good opportunity for another red number on the card.

The course achieved championship status in 2009, when it hosted the Fred Olsen Challenge de España. The event, on the European Challenge Tour, was held at Tecina for eight consecutive years, with the likes of Matthew Baldwin, Adrien Saddier and Brooks Koepka all being victorious.

Tecina Golf Academy

Along with the stunning golf course, Tecina is also the home to a Golf Academy. The Academy has incredible facilities, with the practice area being the closest part of the resort to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean.

The driving range is an all-grass practice facility, with players able to play off the same type of grass that they will see on the golf course. There is also a short game area with a putting green, chipping green and bunker to allow for sand shots.

Christos Sakorafas is the Head Professional at Tecina, and he is on hand to provide golfers of all abilities with coaching and tuition. Individual lessons and group coaching are both available in a range of languages - Spanish, English, German and Greek.
