Dale Hill has been called ‘the South East’s best-kept secret’ and it is pretty easy to see why. There are two 18-hole golf courses – including one designed by 1991 Masters Champion Ian Woosnam – along with great practice facilities, a leisure club with a swimming pool and a 50-room hotel on site. 

 

The two golf courses – the Old Course and the Ian Woosnam Course – offer two vastly different challenges. The Old Course has been around at Dale Hill for more than six decades now, while the Woosnam Course was opened in 1997. The latter is the longer of the two layouts, and has two distinct sections, with a forest section and a more open area around the turn. There are also practice facilities and the opportunity to receive coaching on site. 

 

The Leisure Club at Dale Hill features a fully equipped gym with the latest cardiovascular and weight machines along with free weights, while guests are also able to take a dip in the swimming pool which overlooks the golf courses. There is also a sauna in the leisure club to allow guests to relax even further.

Like many of the other venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, Dale Hill is blessed to have two 18-hole golf courses. The Old Course has been around for six decades now, while the Ian Woosnam Course opened just before the turn of the 21st Century. 

 

Old Course 

The Old Course was the original 18-hole layout created at Dale Hill and was designed atop an old dairy farm. Opening in 1973, the Old Course formed the basis for Dale Hill to become a golf club. The Par 69 layout measures slightly more than 5,800 yards from the tips and features several hazards.  

 

There are only two par 5s on the Par 69 Old Course, which sits in the southwestern portion of the East Sussex-based resort. The 4th is very much birdieable at just 475 yards from the back tees, while the 8th is the longest hole on the course at 535 yards. Two of the five par 3s on the Old Course are more than 200 yards from the back tees, while the 17th is the shortest of the lot, but plays over a water hazard to make it the course’s signature hole.  

 

Ian Woosnam Course

Ryder Cup-winning captain Ian Woosnam was the man behind the second course to be constructed at Dale Hill. 24 years after the Old Course was opened, the Ian Woosnam Course was inaugurated at the resort. The Par 71 layout takes up much more space than the Old and runs in a loop around the eastern side of the property.  

 

The opening hole on the Ian Woosnam Course is a 600-yard par 5, and an accurate drive must be hit as there is water on both sides of the fairway. After the tight and narrow opening section, the course opens as you get into the heart of a round, with glorious views. It also means there is more room for error, especially on the tricky dog-leg right par 4 9th hole, which at more than 400 yards is long and tough.  

 

The 11th is the first of three par 5s on the back nine - a nine that has three 3s, three 4s and three 5s. It is a double dog-leg hole that first turns left before turning right to get to the green. The course then narrows as you get back towards the clubhouse, with the closing hole offering up a real birdie chance. There is out of bounds left, but if you avoid it then there is a real chance of making it to the green in two, and the possibility of an eagle to finish the round... 

Dale Hill does not have the largest set of accommodation compared to other venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, but each of the 50 bedrooms come with their own en-suite and have views of either the countryside or the golf course. 

 

The Small Double and Standard Double/Twin are the smallest offerings in the Dale Hill Hotel, with two of the latter coming in accessible form for those that require a room with adaptations to make a stay more comfortable. The Superior and Executive Rooms are the most luxurious of the bedrooms on site, and each overlooks the golf course. The top of the tree at Dale Hill is the selection of Suites. The four options are all equipped with king-sized beds, separate lounge area and a separate bath and shower in the bathroom.  

 

There is plenty to choose from when it comes to gastronomic options at Dale Hill. Wealden View is the main restaurant, while the Orangery provides access to the roof terrace that overlooks the 18th hole of the Old Course. Both The Lounge and the Clubhouse Bar are relaxed environments, with the latter having a range of snacks and light bites on offer.  

Away from the golf course, Dale Hill has its own Leisure Club, the perfect spot for guests to relax, or to work out. There is a range of cardiovascular and weight machines along with free weights in the well-equipped gym for those that want to get fitter. 

 

Meanwhile, for those that are looking for a relaxing time, there is a swimming pool that overlooks the golf courses, along with a sauna for the ultimate unwind.  

Where is Dale Hill?  
Dale Hill is one of the southeasternmost resorts on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list. Just outside the market town of Wadhurst, Dale Hill is just over 50 miles by road from the centre of London. 

What is the nearest airport and station to Dale Hill?  
London Gatwick Airport, one of the bigger airports that services England’s capital city, is just 35 miles from Dale Hill. In 2022, it was the second busiest airport in the United Kingdom, only behind London Heathrow Airport. British Airway, easyJet and TUI Airways all use London Gatwick as a hub for their airlines, with daily flights to most European countries, as well as flights to the United States and worldwide.  

 

Southeastern Rail run services between London Charing Cross and Hastings. The service runs through Wadhurst, Stonegate and Etchingham, all of which are within six miles of Dale Hill. These trains run in both directions, once an hour. 

What golf facilities does Dale Hill offer?  
Along with two golf courses, Dale Hill also has sufficient practice facilities for those travelling for a trip to the southeast of England. There is a driving range next to the 1st hole of the Ian Woosnam Course, with ten bays, three of which are covered. There are also two practice putting greens, along with a practice bunker. 

 

The pro shop at Dale Hill is well stocked, with the likes of Callaway, Ping, TaylorMade, Titleist, Galvin Green, FootJoy, Calvin Klein, and Adidas all available to purchase. Club repair and regripping is also available.  

Does Dale Hill offer golf lessons?  
For those that would like coaching and tuition during their stay at Dale Hill, there is plenty of scope for that. From one-to-one tuition to group sessions, there is coaching for golfers of all ages and abilities. There is also a programme for both juniors and beginners to the game to encourage more people to take up the sport.
