St Medans is a nine-hole course on the edge of Luce Bay that lives long in the memory, with the undulating terrain on the peninsula worked beautifully.

The epitome of the kind of course that we shine a light on in our Fun Top 100; it is the essence of entertaining golf.

The hilly peninsula offers fabulous scenery both inland and out to sea.

It was founded by JH Thompson, a banker and scratch golfer, who came to nearby Port William from Glasgow and after tiring of cycling to Glenluce to play 18 holes at the County golf club he decided to estabish his own course.

He and his fellow founding members considered two site – the racecourse in Monreith Estate Grounds or Kirkmaiden, and opted for the seaside option.

Stand-out holes include the 4th Hole 'Well Hole', a superb par 3 with danger on both sides, and the dog-leg 7th, a risk-reward hole that is aptly named 'The Lagg'.
