Formby Hall Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Parkland Among Links

Formby Hall’s location in the northwest of England sees it alongside some of the best links courses in the world, including some that have played host to the Open Championship. However, the 18-hole Old Course at Formby Hall goes against the grain and offers a beautiful parkland layout. Add in the new 9-hole Woodhey Dunes Course and you’ve got 27 holes of golfing paradise.

Old Course
A name synonymous with many golfing venues around the world, Formby Hall’s Old Course might not have the same recognition as others, but it is a wonderful golf course. In a region that includes the likes of Royal Birkdale, Southport & Ainsdale, Hillside and the neighbouring Formby Golf Club, Formby Hall gives the region a truly terrific parkland alternative.

The Old Course quickly became a host of the European Challenge Tour to give the layout championship status, with the European Seniors Tour also having visited the resort. The Par 72 track runs at more than 7,000 yards from the championship blue tees, with the whites and yellows coming down at 300-yard increments from that. Water can be found on 16 of the 18 holes and this tree-lined, American-style course is a pleasant antidote to the plethora of seaside courses which lie a couple of miles away.

The 1st is one of the two holes that does not feature any water, with that first coming into play on 2. With a lake to catch any errant shots – although it is more aesthetically pleasing than a real hazard – and six bunkers, this is a tricky early test of your ball striking. The 3rd is the first of four par 5s, and at only 494 yards from the back tees, it is reachable in two. Water in front of the green might put some off from going for the green, though.

Hazards continue to stay in your eyeline throughout the middle part of the round before you come to the other ‘dry’ hole on the course. The par 3 13th has no water, but it is 240 yards from the tips, with four pot bunkers guarding the green. 14 is the longest hole on the property at almost 600 yards, before the tough 15th, the hardest hole on the course. A tough drive over water – anything less than around 170 yards will be sunk – down a tree-lined fairway and then a long iron, or possibly a hybrid, into a two-tiered green which is also well bunkered. The closing hole is a long par 5, a three-shotter can wreck anyone’s card. There’s water all the way down the left and right which can only be ignored when you’re safely on the putting surface. Even with a wedge in your hand for your third, it still catches your eye.

Woodhey Dunes Course
The Woodhey Dunes Course is a glorious par 3 course that has recently been added to the Formby Hall portfolio. The 9-hole short course is on the western boundary of the resort and has holes ranging from 125 to 180 yards long. Water comes into play on several holes, while there are also plenty of bunkers to deal with. A terrific addition to the venue, and something you have to play while you’re at Formby Hall!

4-Star Accommodation

The complex has undergone some significant changes since the turn of the millennium, with the hotel being a key part of that. Now, the resort plays host to a glorious 4-star accommodation range, with rooms, suites and lofts all in its portfolio.

The Formby Classic is the standard offering when it comes to rooms at Formby Hall, but even then, it comes equipped with a king-sized bed, flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and a desk. There are also the Loft Classic Rooms, which are situated on the top floor of the hotel.

There are four types of Superior Room on offer – Garden, Golf, Loft and Terrace. The Loft Superiors are on the top floors, as the name suggests, while the Garden Superior rooms come with a private garden that only guests in those rooms can enjoy. The Golf and Terrace Superior Rooms overlook the golf course, with the latter on the building's ground floor.

At the top end of the accommodation range, there are Deluxe Rooms and two types of Suites. The Deluxe Rooms come with a spacious lounge area in the same room, while the Junior Suites come with a separate living area which looks out on to the championship golf course. The Loft Suite can accommodate two adults and two children, and all suites at Formby Hall come with a complimentary bottle of champagne on arrival.

Spa & Health Club

The Spa & Health Club is renowned in the local area as being top notch. The gym at the health club features a range of Technogym equipment, including cardiovascular machines, resistance machines and free weights, while gym users can enjoy views out onto the TopTracer driving range.
