Slaley Hall is one of several venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list situated in the northeast of England. The accommodation at the resort is houses within the Edwardian mansion at the centre of the resort, while there are two championship golf courses and wonderful practice facilities, along with a health club and spa.

The DP World Tour visited Slaley Hall on six occasions around the turn of the millennium, with the likes of Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie and Retief Goosen all victorious.

Like many other venues on our list, Slaley Hall has two 18-hole golf courses. The Hunting Course and the Priestman Course are the two offerings at Slaley Hall, with each having its own challenges. Dave Thomas and Neil Coles were the men to design the courses, with both having hosted the DP World Tour and European Seniors Tour in their histories.  

 

The Great North Open was played at Slaley Hall on six occasions, with Retief Goosen, Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood and Andrew Coltart were among the winners of the tournament which ran between 1996 and 2002.  

 

The Hunting Course 

The Hunting, designed by world-renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas, is a Par 72 layout on the eastern side of the resort, winding its way through the trees and around the Edwardian mansion at the heart of Slaley Hall. The course has been nicknamed as the ‘Augusta of the North’ in the past.  

 

Following the opening hole, you quickly get into back-to-back par 5s which run parallel to each other. Neither are particularly dangerous in terms of running up a score, but there is a stream which runs across both holes, coming more into play on the 2nd. That same stream cuts across several other holes on the front nine. 

 

Water becomes more prominent on 14, with a large hazard to the left of the fairway, before a second hazard left of the green on this par 4. The 15th is the signature hole on the Hunting Course at Slaley Hall. From the tips, it is over 200 yards long, with most of that needed to be carried over water. Just one greenside bunker, along with trees at the back of the green, add to the danger on 15. The finishing stretch on the Hunting features three par 4s all measuring more than 400 yards from the back tees. Get into the clubhouse with three pars under your belt and you will have beaten your friends, that’s for sure! 

 

The Priestman Course 

Eight-time Ryder Cup player Neil Coles was the man behind the design of the Priestman Course, an 18-hole layout which plays more like a moorland course than the Hunting. With views of the Tyne Valley from the higher ground, and more chance for the wind to affect your shots, the Priestman is not just a ‘secondary course’. 

 

The 10th hole on the Priestman Course is the longest on the property, pushing 600 yards from the back tees. It is one of four par 5s on the course, with the 4th, the first of those, being the first proper sighting of a water hazard. 10 marks the start of the back nine, one which is significantly longer than the front nine, so make sure you have gotten the scoring done on the front side of the Priestman Course. 

 

Like the Hunting Course, the Priestman also has a very tough finish. Both 17 and 18 play more than 450 yards from the tips, with the former requiring an accurate drive to avoid the two fairway bunkers, one placed on either side of the fairway. The 18th, which finishes alongside the driving range facilities at the resort, has a water hazard to the front and left of the green, one that must be missed to avoid a big score on the final hole of your round.

The Queen Junior Suite and Suite are the standard offerings, while the Ladywell, Langley and Minster Acres Suites were all redecorated in 2022 and provide the most luxurious stays at the resort.  

 

The Slaley Hall Hotel is also a dog-friendly venue, with a number of rooms available for those guests that want to bring their four-legged friends along for the journey! 

 

Hadrian’s Brasserie, named after the nearby Hadrian’s Wall, has inventive food and wine with views out over the terrace and into nature. The Claret Jug is the clubhouse offering when it comes to food and drink, offering a relaxed atmosphere for golfers and families alike. Tommy Craig’s Bar and the Whisky Snug offer suitable spots for a nightcap.  

State-of-the-art Life Fitness equipment is available in the gym at the Slaley Hall Health Club, with cardiovascular machines, weight machines and free weights all available, along with a range of classes which are given by qualified trainers.  

 

There is also a swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, along with a relaxation room for those looking to unwind during their stay at Slaley Hall. Nine treatment rooms are available for those that would like to book themselves in for a massage or treatment, with a wide variety of options to choose from, including hot stone massages, facial treatments and full-body massages.  

Where is Slaley Hall?  
Slaley Hall is in the county of Northumbria in England, between the villages of Slaley, Healey and Barleyhill. Both Newcastle and Sunderland are to the east of Slaley Hall, with the former being just 20 miles away.  

What is the nearest airport and station to Slaley Hall?  
Six miles north of Slaley Hall is Riding Mill Station. It lies on the train line between Newcastle and Carlisle, with trains running in both directions frequently.  

 

Newcastle International Airport is 20 miles to the northeast of Slaley Hall, and it is an airport that saw more than four million passengers travel through in 2022. It is a hub for Loganair, as well as a focus airport for Jet2.com, Ryanair and TUI Airways, with flights to most European countries.  

What golf facilities does Slaley Hall offer?  
Along with two championship golf courses, Slaley Hall also has wonderful practice facilities. Located next to the 18th green of the Priestman Course, the driving range is full length, and features both indoor and outdoor bays. There is also a short game area with a putting green, chipping green and practice bunkers.

The floodlit driving range is the place to go if you are looking for coaching or tuition at Slaley Hall. There is a team of PGA-qualified professionals on site at the range with individual lessons, group clinics, short game teaching and on course coaching all available.
