Course Information

There are two very fine courses at this Turin club and while the Pramerica was a contender for our Continental Top 100 list, it is the Trent Jones that Royal Park is best known for.

This multiple host of the Italian Open, first staging the European Tour even in 2009, was built in 1971… and you won’t be surprised at the identity of the architect.

Robert Trent Jones Snr was established as one of the world’s foremost architects when he routed this robust course through an ancient hunting estate on the north-western outskirts of the city centre.

The Trent Jones is a tree-lined parkland that sits on gently undulating terrain and its name, ‘I Roveri’ meaning ‘The Oaks’ is an accurate hint of what to expect.

It does also drift through more open parkland phases while ditches and small lakes add to the challenge.

The Trent Jones is over 7,000 yards off the tips but there is no need to go anywhere near those in order to be tested unless you are a plus-handicapper.

The Trent Jones finishes strongly, with an outstanding 17th arguably the best on the course before a grandstand 18th hole protected by water.

Even if you drive the ball well among the trees, hitting long clubs into these large but undulating greens guarded by water and sand is no fun on this muscular course.

During your round you might spot former superstar footballer Pavel Nedved, once of Juventus and who lives in one of the very few houses on the edge of the course.

Finish poorly and you might deem a trip to the world-class practice facilities – including a floodlit 36-hole putting green and a short-game area – worth your while.

While there you might be hitting balls next to one of the Agnelli family of Fiat and Juventus fame, who own the club. There’s every chance you see at least one member of this famous family somewhere at the club, because they enjoy it as much as anyone.

The club’s ownership gives you an idea about the ambiance of Royal Park, a club that until recently was hand-picked members only but happily now welcomes visitors warmly.

Located 13km from the airport and with views of the Alps, there is a rare serenity and pedigree to this prestigious but friendly club. Chris Bertram
